A series of recent online rumors suggests that Sony could be making a return to the handheld gaming market with a new PlayStation device currently known as “Project Canis.” These rumors have gained credibility due to insights from well-known insiders such as Kepler L2, Rino, and PYO. The device is expected to mark Sony’s first foray into core handheld gaming since the discontinuation of the PlayStation Vita.
According to these reports, the upcoming handheld is said to outperform the Xbox Series S, and when docked, it could surpass the power of a midrange 5080-build PC. It might be released alongside the next PlayStation console and is rumored to be more powerful than the Switch 2. Pyo also mentioned that despite requiring a high-end graphics card, the device is expected to retail at $699.
While some fans are skeptical and believe this announcement could be a Fool’s Day joke, discussions about a PS6 handheld have been ongoing for years. With Nintendo experiencing significant success with the Switch 2, which is projected to surpass 20 million sales in the coming weeks, Sony may be looking to develop its own competitive product.
Insider updates have also provided a glimpse into the potential hardware upgrades that the PlayStation 6 Handheld might feature.
PlayStation 6 Handheld Comes with an Exciting List of Hardware Upgrades
The PlayStation 6 handheld is rumored to include Ray Tracing and Path Tracing capabilities, with the device being described as “massively ahead” of the Xbox Series S. It will reportedly come with 24GB of RAM, although this seems unlikely given the current shortages of RAM and GPUs.
The specifications do not stop there, as the device is also said to feature 4 x Zen 6c Cores, 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units, clock speeds ranging from 1.6-2GHz, and a 128-bit bus paired with LPDDR5X-7500+ memory. The rumors further suggest that the PlayStation 6 handheld will have dual microphones with haptic vibration, along with a touchscreen.
It is also claimed that the device will outperform the XBOX Ally X in terms of performance, though it may not be considered a true powerhouse. While the speculated specs vary widely, there is a possibility that the real device is already in development.
