PlayStation Culls Dark Outlaw Games After One Year

PlayStation Shuts Down Promising New Studio, Dark Outlaw Games, Amidst Broader Restructuring

The Australian gaming landscape is buzzing with news of a significant shake-up at PlayStation, with reports indicating the closure of its newly formed studio, Dark Outlaw Games. Established in March 2025, the studio is reportedly being shuttered by its parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, less than 15 months after its inception. This move, coupled with cutbacks in PlayStation’s mobile division, is said to have resulted in approximately 50 layoffs across the company.

Dark Outlaw Games was conceived as a first-party PlayStation incubation studio, spearheaded by industry veteran Jason Blundell. The studio’s mandate was to develop a new, ambitious AAA project for the PlayStation platform. However, it appears that this flagship project, and indeed any tangible output from Dark Outlaw Games, will never see the light of day. The studio is being shut down before it could officially reveal or deliver its inaugural title.

The initial whispers of a potential shutdown emerged from the online forum ResetEra, attributed to a well-regarded leaker known as ‘J-Soul’. These rumours quickly gained traction, with further aggregation and dissemination by other leakers on social media platforms like X. The definitive confirmation, however, arrived with a report from prominent Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who stated, “PlayStation is also making other cuts, including in mobile development. Around 50 people laid off.”

Strategic Realignment and Cost Management at Sony

These closures and layoffs are being framed as part of a larger strategic realignment and cost management initiative by Sony Interactive Entertainment. While no official statements have directly linked the closure of Dark Outlaw Games to specific financial pressures, the broader industry has seen increased costs associated with AI-driven memory, pressure on hardware profit margins, and softer hardware sales impacting profitability in recent months. It’s understood that these factors may be contributing to Sony’s current operational adjustments.

Unfortunately, Dark Outlaw Games is not the sole PlayStation studio to face closure in 2026. Earlier this year, in February, Bluepoint Studios, known for its acclaimed remasters and remakes, shared a similar fate, signalling a period of significant change within Sony’s development ecosystem.

A Vision Unfulfilled: The Legacy of Jason Blundell

The choice of personnel to lead Dark Outlaw Games underscored PlayStation’s significant investment and high expectations for the studio. Jason Blundell, a highly respected figure in the gaming world, particularly for his extensive work on the Call of Duty franchise, was tasked with guiding its vision. Blundell boasts over 13 years of experience at Treyarch, where he served as co-studio head and played a pivotal role in shaping some of Call of Duty’s most iconic games, maps, and gameplay mechanics.

His contributions to the immensely popular Call of Duty Zombies mode, including his involvement in the creation of legendary maps such as “Mob of the Dead” and “Origins,” have cemented his reputation as a true veteran of the franchise. Blundell’s expertise and creative vision were clearly intended to drive a groundbreaking new experience for PlayStation gamers.

This was not Blundell’s first foray into leading a PlayStation-affiliated studio. He was previously a co-founder of Deviation Games, a studio that was also in the process of developing a game for PlayStation. This prior collaboration with Sony on an unannounced project was ultimately cancelled before its release, and the video game never materialised following Blundell’s departure from Deviation Games in 2022.

The closure of Dark Outlaw Games represents a significant setback for Blundell’s latest ambitious undertaking and leaves many in the gaming community pondering the future direction of PlayStation’s first-party development strategy. The industry will be watching closely to see how Sony navigates these restructuring efforts and what the long-term implications will be for its diverse portfolio of studios and upcoming titles.

The recent announcements have sparked considerable discussion within the gaming community regarding PlayStation’s current standing and strategic decisions. Many are questioning whether these cutbacks indicate underlying struggles within the company or are simply a necessary part of adapting to a rapidly evolving industry landscape. The fate of the roughly 50 individuals impacted by these layoffs also remains a significant concern for many.
