Zak Butters Remains Focused on the Season
Zak Butters, known for his highly sought-after signature in the Australian Football League (AFL), has remained firm in his decision to not finalize his future until the end of the season. Despite receiving multi-million-dollar offers from clubs based in his home state of Victoria, the Port Adelaide player continues to show unwavering commitment to his current team.
“I haven’t really changed my mind about anything,” Butters shared with reporters on Monday. “I think the end of the season will be when I make my decision. And I believe I’ll stick to that throughout the year.”
Butters expressed his enjoyment of the game and the excitement of watching young players emerge. He also highlighted the potential for growth within the team, mentioning that several key players, including Connor Rozee, are expected to return soon.

The triple club champion is currently under contract with Port Adelaide, but his deal will expire at the end of the season. As a restricted free agent, he could attract interest from multiple clubs, including Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong, Essendon, and Richmond. The South Australian club has pledged to match any offer made to Butters.
Butters recently found himself in the spotlight due to a controversial tribunal case involving an alleged abuse of umpire Nick Foot. However, he was cleared after the appeals board ruled that he was denied natural justice, as one of the tribunal members, Jason Johnson, was driving during parts of the hearing.
“I try to keep things clear in my mind,” Butters said. “I focus on my performance and how I can control it. That’s what I’m paid to do.”
He emphasized the time and energy he invests in training, improving as a player, helping his teammates, and being a strong leader. “I fill my cup up with most of that stuff,” he added.
When asked about the difficulty of the case, Butters responded, “I wouldn’t say it was ideal. But difficult or not, I feel like there are worse things happening in the world.”
He acknowledged the support he received from the club and those around him, expressing his gratitude for their backing.

Butters has been acting captain since Connor Rozee suffered a serious hamstring injury in round three, which has kept him out of action for approximately three months. Despite this, the dynamic midfielder has taken on the role with confidence, averaging a career-high 31 disposals per game.
“When I took over the captaincy, and (coach) Josh (Carr) gave me the responsibility, he challenged me to use it and strive to get better without shying away from challenges,” Butters explained.
He also credited the leadership of past and present teammates, such as Tom Jonas, Travis Boak, Ollie Wines, and Darcy Byrne-Jones, for supporting him throughout his career.
“I’ve been lucky to have some really good leaders over the years,” he said. “They’ve helped me grow and continue to improve as a player and a leader.”
