Young Wizards Set to Earn Big Bucks in New Harry Potter Series
The highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, set to grace screens on HBO Max, is already making waves, and now, whispers about the hefty salaries of its young stars have emerged. Reports suggest that the three actors stepping into the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are in line for substantial pay packets for the inaugural season.
At the forefront is 12-year-old Dominic McLaughlin, who is reportedly set to pocket £500,000 for his portrayal of the boy wizard. Sharing the same impressive salary are 12-year-old Alastair Stour, cast as the loyal Ron Weasley, and 11-year-old Arabella Stanton, who will embody the brilliant Hermione Granger. These figures, if accurate, place these young newcomers on a path to potentially becoming millionaires before they reach adulthood, a remarkable feat considering the sheer volume of talent that auditioned – reportedly over 32,000 children vied for these coveted roles. Each season of the new series is slated to delve into one of J.K. Rowling’s seven best-selling novels, promising a faithful and in-depth adaptation for fans.
This reported remuneration stands in stark contrast to the early days of the franchise. Daniel Radcliffe, who famously brought Harry Potter to life on the big screen, received £1 million for his debut in the first film in 2001. By the time the sixth instalment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, hit cinemas in 2009, his earnings had escalated to a staggering £15 million for that film alone. Over the course of the entire film saga, Radcliffe is estimated to have amassed approximately £94 million.
The buzz surrounding the new series is palpable, with the first trailer, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, already smashing records. Released earlier this month, the trailer garnered an astounding 277 million organic views across various platforms within its first 48 hours online, making it the most-watched trailer in the history of HBO and its streaming service, HBO Max.
The two-minute trailer, which offers a tantalising glimpse of the new cast in their iconic roles, also revealed some of the established actors joining the magical world. These include John Lithgow as the wise Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as the formidable groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu taking on the complex character of Professor Snape, the potions master and long-time adversary of Harry. The series is scheduled for a December release.

Progress and Challenges: Season Two and Beyond
The production is already looking ahead, with the script for the second season, which will focus on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, currently in development. HBO President Casey Bloys has expressed the team’s commitment to minimising the time between seasons.
“Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing,” Bloys stated. “It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive. But they’re writing season two now.” This proactive approach aims to ensure a consistent viewing experience as the young actors mature.

However, the series has not been without its controversies since its announcement in 2021. Author J.K. Rowling has faced significant criticism for her past remarks concerning the transgender community, leading some members of the new cast to publicly distance themselves from her views.
John Lithgow, for instance, admitted to considering withdrawing from the project due to the backlash. He has since clarified his disagreement with Rowling’s stance on transgender rights. Similarly, Nick Frost has commented that while Rowling is “allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine – they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.”
Adding to the complexities, Bloys recently confirmed that the production has a “serious security team” in place. This measure was necessitated after Paapa Essiedu revealed he had received racist death threats following his casting as Professor Snape.
Navigating the Digital Landscape: Security and Fan Engagement
Bloys acknowledged the potential for intense fan reactions on large intellectual property projects. “With all actors on any kind of big IP shows – and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got, you know, passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions – it can get scary in places,” he commented.

He further elaborated on the proactive measures taken: “So for any show like that, we anticipated it and tried to have training, you know, best practices in terms of social media and how to handle it. And obviously, we’ve got a serious security team. So unfortunately, it was something that we thought might happen and we just try to be as careful as we can.” This highlights the contemporary challenges faced by major productions in managing online discourse and ensuring the safety of their cast and crew. The commitment to security underscores the high stakes and passionate engagement surrounding the return of the beloved Harry Potter universe.
