Rupert Grint Reflects on the “Traumatising” Early Days of Parenthood
Rupert Grint, the actor best known for his portrayal of Ron Weasley in the iconic Harry Potter film series, has candidly shared his experiences as a father, describing the initial months with his newborn as “quite traumatising.” Grint and his partner, fellow actor Georgia Groome, known for her role in the teen film Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging, have been a couple since 2011.
The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Wednesday, in May 2020. More recently, in 2024, their family grew with the arrival of their second daughter, Goldie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Grint opened up about the overwhelming anxieties that accompanied becoming a father. He admitted to experiencing significant fear regarding the safety of his child, particularly in the early stages. “The fear of the dangers and the baby getting hurt, something being not quite normal. I definitely had it with Wednesday,” he revealed. Grint elaborated on the isolating nature of this period, noting, “Those first few months can be quite isolating. It’s a terrible feeling when it should be the most amazing thing, but it can be quite traumatising.”
This isn’t the first time Grint has discussed his intense anxieties surrounding early fatherhood. In a previous interview with Esquire in 2021, he disclosed his habit of constantly checking if his newborn daughter was still breathing. “I don’t want to go too into detail, but the first night was just terrifying,” he recounted. “You can’t sleep at all, just constantly checking that she’s breathing.”
Grint also touched upon a deeper-seated fear of sleep stemming from his childhood. He explained, “Sleeping, in general, for me, is something I’ve really struggled with. I think as a kid, people always said, ‘They died in their sleep’, so I always thought sleep was a really dangerous, dangerous thing.”
Both Rupert Grint and Georgia Groome experienced life in the public eye from a young age. However, as adults, they have made a conscious effort to step back from the constant glare of public attention, prioritising their privacy.
When discussing his acting career, Grint has consistently expressed a desire to work at his own pace, avoiding the pressures often associated with Hollywood. His foray into social media was notably driven by his personal life; he joined Instagram in 2020 exclusively to introduce his first child. This move was so impactful that he broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to reach one million followers.
Reflecting on the impact of fatherhood, Grint stated, “It definitely has kind of changed my perspective on things but also in a helpful way.”
Interestingly, Rupert Grint was the first of the main Harry Potter child stars to become a parent. His former co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, welcomed his first child with his partner Erin Darke in April 2023. This milestone highlights the passage of time and the evolving personal lives of the actors who grew up on screen.
