Molotov Cocktails Hurled at Russian Cultural Centre in Prague
Prague is currently the scene of an unusual and concerning incident, with an unidentified assailant targeting a centre dedicated to promoting Russian culture and history. Late on Thursday evening, several Molotov cocktails were thrown at the building, known locally as the Russian House. While the firebombs did not ignite the structure, the attack has prompted an immediate investigation by Czech police.
Initial reports and photographic evidence reveal the extent of the damage. One window was shattered, and smoke damage is visible on two other windows and a section of the building’s wall. Fortunately, the fire did not spread, preventing a more catastrophic outcome.
The Russian House, while funded by the Russian state, operates without diplomatic immunity. Its stated mission is to foster cultural exchange, offering a range of activities including educational and scientific programs, alongside Russian language courses.
Igor Girenko, the director of the centre, provided details to the Russian state news agency Tass. He stated that out of the six Molotov cocktails thrown, three failed to detonate, a factor that likely contributed to the limited damage.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has reacted strongly to the incident. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, as reported by Tass, condemned the act as “barbaric.” In response to the attack, the Russian embassy in Prague has formally requested that Czech authorities enhance security measures for all Russian institutions and their personnel operating within the country.
The Czech Interior Minister, Lubomír Metnar, has labelled the attack as “unacceptable” and confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. He assured the public that authorities are prepared to implement further measures if deemed necessary to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic and cultural establishments.
This incident raises questions about the security of foreign cultural institutions and the potential for escalating tensions.
