Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are gearing up for the release of their next big project, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a highly anticipated sequel to the massively successful animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Set to hit cinemas on April 1, 2026, the dynamic duo are reprising their roles as the beloved brothers, Mario and Luigi. While their on-screen partnership in the Mario universe is well-established, it’s not the first time Pratt and Day have shared a cinematic endeavour. However, in a surprising turn of events, Pratt’s contribution to their earlier collaboration ultimately didn’t make it to the final cut.
A Long-Standing Professional Connection
The bond between Chris Pratt and Charlie Day extends far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. While many might assume their professional acquaintance began on the set of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, given it’s their most prominent shared credit, their paths actually crossed much earlier. The actors revealed in a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that they’ve known each other for well over a decade.
When prompted by host Jimmy Fallon about the duration of their friendship, Pratt estimated, “I want to say many years. We have known each other well for like five or six years.”
Day, however, chimed in with a more distant recollection, stating they had met “ages ago” while working on the 2010 romantic comedy, Going the Distance. Pratt had a minor role in the film, a scene that unfortunately, was ultimately excised from the movie.
A Forgotten Role and a Plane Scene
Pratt recounted the experience of his cut scene with a touch of humour. “It’s called Going the Distance. I was cut out of the movie. I did one scene. I was on an airplane next to your darling wife, I believe. She and I were doing a scene together, and then I kind of forgot about it. I never saw myself in a movie; I was very excited. Got the team gathered….. then I was cut out of this movie,” he shared, recalling the moment of discovering his scene hadn’t made the final edit.
The scene in question reportedly featured Pratt alongside Charlie Day’s wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, on a flight. Despite the initial disappointment of being cut, this early collaboration seems to have laid the groundwork for their continued professional relationship.
Looking Ahead to the Mario Sequel
The enduring professional synergy between Pratt and Day has clearly stood the test of time, evolving from their initial, albeit uncredited, work together to their current starring roles in the Super Mario franchise. The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has set a high bar, and all eyes will be on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to see if it can capture lightning in a bottle once again.
With the release date of April 1, 2026, fast approaching, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Mario and Luigi. The chemistry between Pratt and Day has been a significant factor in the franchise’s appeal, and their continued collaboration suggests a strong foundation for future installments. It remains to be seen if this latest adventure will be another box office triumph, but if their past work is any indication, the prospects are certainly bright. And who knows, perhaps a third cinematic outing for the iconic plumbing brothers will further cement their enduring on-screen partnership.
