As the 2026 Major League Baseball season rapidly approaches, the San Diego Padres find themselves in a position to potentially defy expectations. Following a disappointing postseason exit last year, the team opted for a more understated offseason, choosing not to significantly overhaul their roster. Instead, the Padres are placing a considerable amount of faith in internal development, anticipating that several players will elevate their performance throughout the upcoming campaign. The onus, however, also falls heavily on the shoulders of their established stars to lead the charge, with the ultimate hope that their collective brilliance can propel the team into the playoff picture.
Should San Diego manage to secure a postseason berth, the narrative can shift entirely, opening the door for unpredictable outcomes. However, achieving this goal hinges on individual players performing at the absolute peak of their abilities.
High Expectations for Xander Bogaerts
A significant focal point for the Padres’ aspirations this season is infielder Xander Bogaerts. Since his arrival in San Diego a few years ago, Bogaerts’ tenure has been somewhat below the lofty standards set by his substantial $280 million contract. Padres president of baseball operations, A.J. Preller, recently articulated the critical role Bogaerts is expected to play.
“We’re a different team if we get the Bogaerts that we’ve seen for most of his career and for flashes here in San Diego,” Preller stated. “I know he’s had a good offseason. He’s excited about that challenge and being that player. We’ve got a lot of belief in him. He’s a big part of our team, for sure, and we’re looking forward to seeing that player.”
Bogaerts, a four-time All-Star, achieved all his selections prior to joining the Padres. For San Diego to make a significant impact this season, Bogaerts must recapture the All-Star form that the team envisioned when they signed him.
Last season, the veteran infielder posted a .263 batting average with a mere 11 home runs and 53 runs batted in. His performance in San Diego has been characterized by inconsistency, leading to potential regrets regarding the generous 11-year, $280 million deal.
The X-Factor in San Diego’s Lineup
With the formidable presence of Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. flanking him, Bogaerts possesses the ideal environment to rebound and deliver a strong season. Many view Bogaerts as the primary X-factor for the Padres this year. If he can consistently perform at a high level, the offensive potential of this team could reach unprecedented heights.
Preller elaborated on the impact Bogaerts can have: “He’s a real bat that can hit anywhere — one to five — in a lineup and put up an .800-plus OPS. That’s a Xander Bogaerts season. And I think (if) we start getting that from the middle of the diamond, from the shortstop position — (if) he’s running, he’s moving well, he’s stealing bags and a guy that can play both sides of the ball, he changes our dynamics. That’s what we’re looking forward to seeing this year.”
Addressing Rotation Concerns
The starting rotation is undeniably a significant concern for the Padres heading into the new season. Consequently, the offense will be tasked with shouldering a substantial portion of the team’s success throughout the year. Preller’s high expectations for Bogaerts underscore his awareness of this dynamic, placing immense pressure on the former All-Star to elevate his game.
The team’s success will hinge on Bogaerts’ ability to revert to his previous elite form, complemented by the continued development of other players and the potential for unforeseen contributions from the roster. If these elements align, the Padres could emerge as a formidable force in the league, capable of surprising many.
