Radio Personality Slams Ex-Footy Star for ‘Bullying and Disrespect’ Following Breakup
A public spat has erupted between radio presenter Bridget Hustwaite and AFL player Oscar McDonald, with Hustwaite accusing her former partner of “blatant bullying and disrespect” following their split late last year. The drama unfolded on social media, with Hustwaite taking to Instagram to address a perceived jab from McDonald on his 30th birthday.
McDonald, a defender for the Fremantle Dockers, posted a photo of himself celebrating his milestone birthday surrounded by friends, accompanied by the caption: “30. Tough age apparently.” This comment immediately raised eyebrows, given Hustwaite’s recent book titled ‘Figuring Out 30’, leading many to interpret it as a pointed dig at his ex-girlfriend. The remark was not lost on McDonald’s inner circle either, with his sister Sacha responding cryptically with: “Figured it out.”

Hustwaite, who had recently been released from hospital after receiving treatment for a ruptured cyst, wasted no time in hitting back. In a video shared on her Instagram Story, she expressed her disappointment and frustration.
“I thought I was in for quite a peaceful day of recovery but I’ve been sent articles throughout the day of some social media posts that I can’t access, because I have this person blocked on socials,” she explained. “I was going to ignore it because I don’t like how this kind of conversation and topic can be trivialised for online consumption, like, regarding relationships. But I also can’t really just sit back and allow, like, blatant bullying and disrespect of me and my work.”

She continued to highlight the implications of such behaviour for individuals in public-facing roles. “If you work in a public-facing role, and especially if you represent, you know, a brand organisation, a sporting club, this is not a good look on you, on who you work for, and it’s just mean.”
Hustwaite underscored the seriousness of her decision to end the relationship. “I ended my relationship last year for reasons that are really serious to me … for me it’s much more serious than just airing dirty laundry. I don’t know why a birthday post had to be turned into just taking swipes at me but, you know, I’m not surprised. I just wanted to stand up for myself.”

This public confrontation marks a stark contrast to the seemingly promising start of their relationship. Hustwaite had relocated from Melbourne to Perth late in 2023 to live with McDonald after he signed with the Fremantle Dockers. At the time, she described the move as “a fun new adventure and a really nice change of scenery,” embracing life in Western Australia and expressing openness to new opportunities while supporting McDonald’s AFL career.
However, the demands of their long-distance arrangement and supporting a professional athlete’s career took a toll. Hustwaite later revealed the significant effort she had put into the relationship, stating she had flown between Perth and Melbourne “60 times” during their time together.
In a candid message shared this week, she alluded to the emotional and personal cost of the relationship, ultimately prioritising her own well-being. “I couldn’t keep abandoning myself, my health and my career,” she wrote. Despite the public fallout, she expressed no regrets, stating, “No regrets because I know my heart, what I bring to all of my relationships and what I stand for both publicly and privately.”

The situation has drawn significant attention, with many observers noting the contrast between the public image of a supportive couple and the current acrimonious exchange. The Daily Mail has reportedly reached out to Oscar McDonald for comment on the matter.

The saga highlights the complexities of relationships involving public figures and the challenges of navigating personal lives under the constant scrutiny of social media and the public eye. Hustwaite’s vocal stance underscores a broader conversation about the importance of self-respect and setting boundaries, even in the face of public pressure and perceived personal attacks. Her decision to speak out, particularly while recovering from a health issue, signals a strong commitment to her personal integrity and the value of her own work and well-being.
