Rahane stands by his game plan despite SRH defeat

Ajinkya Rahane Responds to Criticism and Strike Rate Concerns

After a tough loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens, Ajinkya Rahane addressed the growing scrutiny around his batting style and strike rate. The 37-year-old batsman, known for his experience and consistency, stood up to critics who have been questioning his approach on the field.

Rahane stated: “I think I have one of the best strike-rates so far from 2023, and people who are talking about me are probably not watching the game, and they have a certain agenda against me. They don’t like me playing; they don’t like to watch me play. The amount of success I got, I guess, they are jealous. I am not too worried. You guys know what I am doing. Just one bad inning, not a bad innings, but my intent was there. Sometimes, as a batter, you don’t get that rhythm, you don’t get that flow.”

A Mixed Performance in Key Matches

Rahane started the season with a strong performance, scoring 67 off 40 balls against Mumbai Indians alongside Finn Allen. His innings had two distinct phases—scoring 36 runs off 18 balls during the powerplay and then needing 22 balls to score his final 31 runs. While this shift in tempo was noted by critics, it also highlighted the challenges of adapting to different match situations.

He added: “People who are talking, either they don’t understand the game, and I think they want me to, you know, play a different kind of innings. They didn’t expect that Ajinkya Rahane will basically improve his game this much. I am happy they are talking about me, negative or positive. Let them talk. It’s been amazing with Finn Allen. We had a very good partnership in Mumbai. For the first 6 overs, we always look to play fearless cricket with freedom. At times, you will struggle, but that’s ok. It’s important to accept, but I know what I am doing, what I did in the past, and I back myself rather than thinking about whoever is talking about me.”

Struggles in the Powerplay

Despite his earlier success, Rahane faced difficulties in the powerplay during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He managed only 8 runs from 10 balls, which contributed to Kolkata Knight Riders’ failure to chase a challenging target of 226 runs. This performance raised questions about his adaptability under pressure.

However, Rahane remained confident in his abilities. He mentioned that he has been under discussion for nearly two decades and does not feel the need to prove himself to anyone. “People have been talking about me for nearly two decades and I do not feel the need to prove my talent to anyone,” he said.

Looking Ahead

As the IPL 2026 season progresses, Rahane remains focused on his role within the team. He emphasized the importance of maintaining self-belief and staying true to his approach, regardless of external opinions. His mindset reflects a player who has navigated the highs and lows of professional cricket for years.

With his experience and determination, Rahane continues to be a key figure for KKR. Whether facing criticism or praise, he remains committed to his game and the legacy he has built over the years.
