Key Matchup Could Determine Origin Selection
The upcoming clash between the Sydney Roosters and the Cronulla Sharks is set to be a crucial test for players vying for selection in the 2026 State of Origin series. Reece Robson, the current hooker for the Roosters, has acknowledged that this game could play a significant role in determining who represents New South Wales in the opening match of the series.
Robson currently holds the position, but his spot is not guaranteed, especially with the Blues’ recent performance against Queensland in last year’s series. Coach Laurie Daley faces pressure to deliver results this year, and any failure to secure a win could put his position at risk. As a result, Daley may consider several changes to his squad, with one of the most critical decisions being the choice of hooker.
Blayke Brailey, the dummy half for the Sharks, has been a standout performer for Cronulla and was selected in the Australian Kangaroos squad last year following a career-best season. He has continued his strong form into 2026, making him a strong contender for the Origin spot. Despite his lack of experience at the Origin level, many believe Brailey is ahead of Robson in the selectors’ eyes.
Robson, however, remains optimistic about retaining his position. He has not ruled out the possibility of being named in the team, despite missing the start of the 2026 season due to a dip in form during the end of 2025 in Townsville.
Focus on Consistent Performance
Robson emphasized the importance of consistent form as the selection period approaches. With the Origin squad selection still approximately six weeks away, he believes that sustained performance throughout the season will be key.
“This has been a good experience, the first part of this year to try and get my best foot forward ahead of Origin,” Robson said in a media interview.
“Blake [Brailey] is a great player, and I’ve got a good chance to play him this weekend. But yeah, it just comes down to the footy at the moment and who’s playing the best footy coming into that time of year.”
He added that while the selectors might take into account the performance of players in the lead-up games, consistency over the entire season would ultimately determine the final selections.
“When you look at it that way, I guess it probably is something they [selectors] might look at. But again, there’s a lot of games between the start of the season and Origin time.”
The Role of This Weekend’s Game
Robson acknowledged that this weekend’s match could serve as an indicator of who is in better form. However, he stressed that it is the ability to maintain high-level performance week in, week out that will make the difference.
“A game like this definitely would have an indication towards it. It’s more the consistency and [continuing] to play at a higher level week in, week out.”
With the stakes high and the competition fierce, both Robson and Brailey will be under intense scrutiny as they prepare for what could be a defining moment in their careers. The outcome of this match may not only influence the immediate selection for the 2026 State of Origin series but also shape the future of both players in the broader rugby league landscape.
