Elle Woods is Back! Reese Witherspoon Confirms Legally Blonde 3 is a Go
Fans of the iconic Elle Woods can rejoice, as Reese Witherspoon has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated third instalment of the Legally Blonde franchise is still very much in development. The beloved actress, who recently celebrated a significant personal milestone, shared an update that will surely send a wave of pink-clad excitement across the nation.
When pressed about the status of the long-awaited sequel in a recent interview, Witherspoon didn’t hold back. “Absolutely,” she stated, confirming that Elle Woods’s journey is far from over. While a definitive release date remains elusive, the star explained that the creative team is diligently working on crafting the narrative and expanding the “world” of the film.
“It’s a whole world that we want to build with this character,” Witherspoon elaborated. She recognises the immense desire from a broad audience to see Elle return, particularly at a more mature and perhaps even more impactful stage of her life. This sentiment echoes the broader cultural shift towards celebrating multifaceted female characters that resonate with real-life experiences.

Witherspoon drew a parallel to the cultural phenomenon surrounding Barbie, noting that audiences are eager to connect with characters who were integral to their formative years. “There’s a feeling that women want to rally around those characters that were part of their childhood and celebrate the idea that Elle Woods is more than the color pink,” she explained. She emphasised that Elle represents more than just fashion or a specific aesthetic; she embodies “self-worth and accomplishment.”
This confirmation comes hot on the heels of news regarding a Legally Blonde prequel series titled Elle. This upcoming television show, set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 1, will feature newcomer Lexi Minetree stepping into the shoes of a younger Elle Woods navigating her high school years. The series, brought to life by creator Laura Kittrel and produced by Witherspoon’s own production company, Hello Sunshine, has already secured a second season renewal, signalling a strong belief in the enduring appeal of the Legally Blonde universe.
A Cult Classic’s Enduring Legacy
During the same interview, Witherspoon reflected on the profound impact of the original Legally Blonde film, acknowledging its transformation into a genuine cult classic that has resonated with women across multiple generations. “I had no idea,” she admitted. “We worked really hard on the messaging.”

A key element of the original film’s success, Witherspoon highlighted, was its deliberate focus on empowering its female protagonist. “I was determined to make sure it was a story about a woman that wasn’t about her romantic relationships,” she stated. “It was about how she worked hard to accomplish something very difficult on her own terms, and no relationship would define her early 20s like that.” This commitment to portraying a woman’s agency and ambition has undoubtedly contributed to the film’s lasting appeal.
The Creative Minds Behind Elle’s Next Chapter
The script for Legally Blonde 3 is being penned by a formidable writing duo: Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, co-creator of the hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While the project has been in the works for some time, the latest update from Kaling over a year ago indicated that a completed script had been submitted.
“Dan Goor and I just finished up a draft of Legally Blonde 3, which I can’t talk about, but we turned it in before Christmas,” Kaling shared with Variety in February 2025. This suggests that the wheels are steadily turning, bringing Elle Woods’s story into her forties.

Kaling has previously hinted at the compelling premise for the third film, telling Access Hollywood in January 2021, “I can’t wait to see what people will think of the way we wrote Elle Woods. We wrote Elle Woods at 40, so how Elle is at 40 versus how she was at 21 has been really fun to imagine.” This exploration of Elle’s evolution as she navigates a new decade of life promises to be a central theme.
Fans will also be thrilled to hear that Jennifer Coolidge is expected to reprise her beloved role as Paulette Bonafonté, Elle’s loyal friend and confidante. Witherspoon herself is, of course, confirmed to return as the titular character. Her initial enthusiasm for revisiting Elle Woods was evident back in 2019, when she told Ellen DeGeneres, “I loved playing that character and she’s so amazing. And I mean, if you guys want it, I guess I’ll do it!” It appears the fans have spoken, and Elle Woods is ready to bend and snap her way back onto the big screen.
