Broncos’ Derby Hopes Dented as Star Prop Ruled Out
Brisbane’s anticipation for their derby clash against the Dolphins has been significantly dampened with the news that star prop Payne Haas has been sidelined due to a shoulder injury. The formidable front-rower sustained a knock to his AC joint during the Broncos’ hard-fought 18-14 victory over Melbourne. In a move demonstrating caution ahead of what promises to be a gruelling season, the club has opted not to risk Haas, a key representative player for both New South Wales and Samoa.
Despite the blow of losing Haas, the Broncos will welcome back the experience of captain Adam Reynolds, who has recovered from a rib injury. Reynolds is set to resume his role at halfback for Friday night’s encounter at Suncorp Stadium. Ben Hunt, who deputised at No. 7 against the Storm, will revert to the bench.

Stepping into the void left by Haas in the front row will be New Zealand international Xavier Willison. Furthermore, barnstorming second-rower Brendan Piakura has been promoted to the starting side, a reward for his impressive performances off the bench against Melbourne.
Warriors Bolstered by Early Return of Playmaker
In a surprising turn of events, the Warriors have named gun playmaker Luke Metcalf to make a return three weeks ahead of schedule from his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Metcalf had initially been projected to be sidelined until round seven. However, he is now slated to partner the in-form Tanah Boyd in the halves for Friday’s clash against the Wests Tigers.
Metcalf, who was a strong contender for the Dally M Medal before his injury last season, is expected to significantly bolster a Warriors side that has impressed with an unbeaten start to the 2026 season.

The Kiwi outfit also receives further boosts with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Chanel Harris-Tavita listed on the team sheet following recent head knocks. Adam Pompey’s return from personal leave also strengthens the squad.
Team News and Injury Updates Across the Competition
Wests Tigers
Jock Madden is set to partner in the halves for the Wests Tigers, filling in for the injured Jarome Luai. This will mark Madden’s first appearance in the starting side since 2024. Despite being listed among the reserves, highly-rated playmaker Latu Fainu could still feature in the side, potentially making a late charge after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery.
St George Illawarra Dragons
The Dragons have chosen not to include Ryan Couchman on their team sheet ahead of Tuesday night’s judiciary hearing concerning a hip-drop tackle. Young forward Loko Pasifiki Tonga has been named on the bench to face the Gold Coast Titans, despite leaving training in an ambulance earlier in the week following a neck injury.
Newcastle Knights
Electric five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe is expected to take the field against Canterbury after successfully recovering from the knee injury he sustained during Newcastle’s season opener in Las Vegas.
Cronulla Sharks
Second-rower Briton Nikora will miss Cronulla’s clash against Canberra due to a broken nose. However, he remains a chance to be fit for round five. Teig Wilton is the player who will replace the Kiwi international in the back row, having made his own return from a shoulder injury last week.
Sydney Roosters
Billy Smith has made a full recovery from the concussion he suffered in an e-bike accident and will replace Junior Pauga for the Sydney Roosters’ encounter against Manly, Daly Cherry-Evans’ former club.
Manly Sea Eagles
The Sea Eagles have opted to stick with the same starting side that endured a disappointing loss to the reigning wooden spooners, Newcastle, in round two.
