Ricky Gervais Unrecognisable in 80s Snap with Belted Jumpsuit

A Nostalgic Look Back at Ricky Gervais’ Early Musical Journey

Ricky Gervais, the acclaimed comedian and actor, has recently been the subject of attention due to a vintage photo that has gone viral online. The image showcases him in a belted white jumpsuit, a look that is vastly different from his current style. This throwback snap takes us back to his 1980s pop career, revealing a side of the comedian that many fans may not be familiar with.

At the age of 22, Gervais was part of a new wave duo called Seona Dancing, formed with his friend Bill Macrae. The band was signed by London Records and released two singles, “More To Lose” and “Bitter Heart,” but neither of these tracks managed to make it onto the UK Singles Chart. Despite this, the duo did manage to appear on the British kids’ TV show Razzmatazz, which marked one of their only television performances.

The retro photo has sparked a wave of reactions from fans, who were surprised by Gervais’ youthful appearance. Comments flooded in, with some saying things like “Very Duran Duran, Spandau looking…,” while others remarked, “Mr Gervais already being cool in the eighties.” Many fans expressed their delight at seeing a different side of the comedian, with one comment reading, “This will never not amuse and amaze me.”

Fans were also taken aback by the fact that Gervais had a music career before achieving mainstream fame. Some said, “Wow didn’t know Ricky could sing,” while others questioned, “No way is that him.” The revelation that he was once a singer left many fans in awe.

Despite his limited success in the music industry, Gervais found greater recognition through his BBC television series, The Office, which premiered in 2001. He has often spoken about how music influences his work, using any opportunity to showcase his passion as a “frustrated, failed musician.” His most iconic character, David Brent from The Office, is also a failed musician, and Gervais even released a mockumentary movie in 2016 detailing the fictional boss’s attempts to break into the music charts.

In addition, during the second season of his hit show Extras in 2006, David Bowie made a cameo and performed a song composed by Gervais. This collaboration highlighted the deep connection between Gervais and music.

During an appearance on Graham Norton in 2016, Gervais shared his love for incorporating music into his work. He mentioned writing songs for The Simpsons and collaborating with David Bowie on the show Extras. He described himself as a “frustrated, failed musician” and emphasized that he always finds a way to sneak a song into his projects.

Graham Norton then showed a promo shot from Gervais’ Seona Dancing days, prompting Gervais to express his bashfulness about his past look. He joked, “That’s called Seona Dancing, let’s move on. I’m not embarrassed by [the throwback picture], I’m embarrassed by [my current look]. Everyone’s going, ‘What the f**k happened?’ I’ll tell you what happened: Pizza happened.”

While his music career may have floundered, Gervais has achieved great success in other areas. He recently made history by winning the first Golden Globe in the new category, Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This award came as a surprise to him, as he initially believed he had no chance of winning. He beat notable contenders such as Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes.

Gervais did not attend the ceremony in Beverly Hills, with comic Jim Gaffigan accepting the award on his behalf for his Netflix special Armageddon.
