Roadworks on A127 in Southend to Start This Month

Roadworks to Begin in Eastwood

Roadworks are set to commence in Eastwood this month, affecting the A127. Cadent Gas will carry out a series of phased roadworks, including closures, starting from April 20. These works aim to replace 2.6km of pipes, which have been in place for between 80 and 100 years. The goal is to reduce the need for recurrent repairs in the future.

The roadworks will take place on several key roads, including Bellhouse Lane, Bellhouse Road, Rayleigh Road, and Snakes Lane. Traffic management measures will be implemented throughout the project. Southend Council and Cadent Gas have worked together to ensure that the impact on local schools is minimized.

Paul Collins, a Southend Lib Dem councillor for Eastwood Park, expressed his support for the project. He stated, “The investment is very welcome, and we have had constructive conversations with Cadent to minimize the impact these works will have, particularly for local schools.”

He added, “These works are necessary to future-proof the gas network. While we understand the significant impact on residents, the hope is that it will be less than the long-term impact of piecemeal repairs. There have been recent gas leaks in the area, highlighting the importance of these works. This project will prevent such incidents in the future.”

Initially, the timeframe for the works was a concern for the council as it would have affected nearby schools. However, by phasing the works, the construction on Snakes Lane will not begin until the summer holidays. Mr. Collins thanked Cadent for considering the needs of residents.

Impact on Local Residents

Residents in Eastwood can expect disruptions during the roadworks. The phased approach aims to reduce the impact on daily life, especially for those with children attending local schools. The collaboration between Southend Council and Cadent Gas has ensured that the schedule is adjusted to avoid peak times for school activities.

The roadworks are part of a broader effort to modernize the gas network and prevent future issues. While the immediate inconvenience is acknowledged, the long-term benefits are expected to outweigh the temporary challenges.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to the community. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the work schedules and any changes that may affect their daily routines.
