The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Shamrock Festival in Roanoke, Virginia, is a highlight of the downtown calendar, drawing significant crowds. However, the economic impact of this vibrant event extends far beyond the parade route itself, with the subsequent surge in business for downtown bars and breweries proving to be a crucial boost for the local economy.
On Saturday, the St. Patrick’s Day festivities translated into some of the highest sales volumes of the year for establishments throughout downtown Roanoke. This annual celebration provides a much-needed injection of revenue, particularly after the typically slower winter months.
A Significant Boost for Local Establishments
For businesses like Martin’s, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration represents a dramatic increase in operational capacity and customer traffic. Jason Martin, the owner, explained that the adoption of a street party format, a departure from their usual weekend operations, allowed them to expand their physical space significantly.
“When the weather is beautiful like it is today, it could be eight to ten times busier than a normal Saturday,” Martin stated. “It’s crazy. I mean, obviously, our capacity is super increased, too, because we do a street party, which we don’t normally do. So that increased our capacity five to six times alone.”
This expansion in capacity, coupled with the influx of revelers, can lead to a tenfold increase in business on parade day compared to an average Saturday. Martin emphasized the critical role such events play in the financial health of his establishment, especially after periods of slower business.
“These outdoor events really get us through the slow times,” Martin said. “We had a really crappy January with the weather. And so we’re kind of still digging out of a hole. So this will help catch us up. It’s very important to the health of the business that we can do these outdoor events, especially St. Patrick’s Day.”
Tripling Sales and Non-Stop Action
Similarly, Olde Salem Brewery’s Roanoke location reported a substantial increase in business, with sales tripling compared to a typical Saturday. Assistant Manager Stephanie Hernandez described the atmosphere as relentlessly busy.
“It is chaotic from the time that the parade starts until at least, like, dinner time for us,” Hernandez remarked, painting a picture of continuous activity throughout the day.
Marking the End of Winter and the Start of Spring
The sentiment of St. Patrick’s Day serving as a turning point for the downtown business scene was echoed by Ethan Summerson, an employee at Big Lick Brewery. He anticipated the brewery would serve anywhere from hundreds to a thousand pints on the day of the festivities.
“Every St. Patrick’s Day, that’s kind of like when you mark when the winter slow season is over,” Summerson explained. This event signifies a transition from the quieter winter months to the more active spring and summer seasons.
Summerson also highlighted the broader economic benefits of the event, noting that it drives significant foot traffic throughout the downtown area.
“A lot of the downtown businesses thrive on this kind of business because you get a lot of people walking around and a lot of it is about, sort of, going from place to place,” Summerson observed. This “bar hopping” or “exploring” mentality benefits multiple businesses as people move between venues.
Hernandez from Olde Salem Brewery added that the event can also introduce new customers to their establishment.
“They’re just stopping because it’s convenient,” Hernandez said. “And then they realize, oh my gosh, this is a really cool spot.” This opportunistic foot traffic can convert casual passersby into loyal patrons.
Looking Ahead to Warmer Months
With the success of the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, downtown bars are optimistic about the business outlook for the coming warmer months. The momentum generated by this major event is expected to carry through as the weather improves and more people are inclined to spend time outdoors and explore the city’s offerings. The increased visibility and positive customer experiences during these peak events lay a strong foundation for continued growth and prosperity for Roanoke’s downtown businesses.
