Roberto De Zerbi denies Tottenham money talk

A New Era at Tottenham: De Zerbi’s Vision for the Future

Roberto De Zerbi has dismissed any notion that he joined Tottenham Hotspur for financial reasons, instead focusing on his mission to rapidly transform the team’s mentality in order to secure their place in the Premier League. With the club currently facing a critical battle to avoid relegation, De Zerbi is determined to bring a fresh perspective and a long-term vision to the squad.

Tottenham’s journey this season has been challenging, as they have yet to secure a Premier League victory in 2026. The team is now in a real fight to prevent what would be their first relegation in 49 years. This pressure has led to several managerial changes, with De Zerbi stepping in after previous attempts to stabilize the situation proved unsuccessful.

Initially, the club turned to Thomas Frank, but he was sacked on February 11. Following this, they attempted to hire De Zerbi, but his departure from Marseille coincided with the same week, leading them to appoint Igor Tudor as an interim manager. However, Tudor’s tenure was short-lived, as he lost five of his seven matches before leaving by mutual consent on March 29. This time, De Zerbi answered the call, despite the risks associated with taking over a team in such a precarious position.

De Zerbi was asked if money was a significant factor in his decision to join Tottenham. He firmly denied this, emphasizing that his career choices have always been driven by his passion for football rather than financial gain. “You can find the right answer in my history because I left a lot of money in my life and the money never changed my focus on my work,” he said.

He also expressed his respect for his former club, Marseille, and acknowledged the emotional connection he still feels towards it. “Marseille was a special place. I didn’t say goodbye yet to my former fans, my former club, because I didn’t want to make any polemic. And in that moment, it was good to stay at home.”

De Zerbi believes that the key to success lies in changing the mentality of the squad, which is currently low on confidence. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and believing in themselves. “The most important part in football is the mental part,” he stated. “You are used to speaking too much about the style of play, the tactical disposition, blah, blah, blah, but in the end, the mental part is crucial in every work, especially in football, especially in this moment in Tottenham.”

A Focus on Attacking Football

De Zerbi also hinted at his intention to implement a more attacking style of play, one that he believes is better suited to the current squad. He referenced his time at Brighton, where he worked alongside Ange Postecoglou, and highlighted the qualities of several players, including Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero. “I want to keep the ball. I want to see again the Tottenham I watched with (Ange) Postecoglou because in my second season in Brighton, there was Postecoglou here with a lot of these players and it was one of the best teams in terms of quality of play.”

Despite the challenges, De Zerbi remains optimistic about the potential of the team. He pointed to recent performances against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid as evidence of the squad’s capabilities. “The guys know the situation is very difficult, but if you watch them against Liverpool and also Atletico Madrid, they showed their qualities, they showed sometimes the right spirit. We have to show this for 90 minutes and we have to believe in ourselves.”

Overcoming Challenges

One of the key challenges De Zerbi faces is the mental resilience of the goalkeepers. Guglielmo Vicario is still sidelined, and Antonin Kinsky is under pressure following a difficult performance against Atletico Madrid. De Zerbi expressed his belief in Kinsky’s abilities, stating, “I think his qualities are enough to play at Tottenham. The other players believe in him. He has to stay calm and confident. He is playing at Tottenham. He has to be stronger than the mistakes and to move on.”

As Tottenham prepares for their upcoming match against Sunderland, the focus will be on the mental strength of the squad and the implementation of De Zerbi’s vision. With seven games remaining, the team must find a way to turn their fortunes around and secure their place in the Premier League. De Zerbi’s leadership and determination could be the key to achieving this goal.
