A New Challenge for Conor Gallagher
Roberto De Zerbi has taken on the task of helping Conor Gallagher rediscover his best form and contribute to Tottenham’s efforts to avoid relegation. The 26-year-old midfielder, who left Chelsea two years ago, has struggled since moving to Tottenham in January from Atletico Madrid. His £55 million transfer has not met expectations for either the club or the England international.
Gallagher had hoped that returning to London would boost his chances of being selected for the World Cup, but he arrived at a time when Spurs were facing significant challenges. He made little impact in his early appearances and was eventually dropped by interim manager Igor Tudor. His last appearance for England was in June, where he earned his 22nd cap in a friendly match against Senegal.
De Zerbi, who took charge of Tottenham, emphasized the difficulties Gallagher has faced. “For Gallagher it has not been easy,” he said. “He left Chelsea after I don’t know how many seasons, went to Atletico Madrid, and now in Tottenham, in this moment for Tottenham. He was a leader in Chelsea, and now he has to adapt to a new club, to new teammates, to a new stadium, to a new everything. I have to help him to put as a target the Gallagher he was at Chelsea.”

De Zerbi previously tried to sign Gallagher from Chelsea while managing Brighton in the summer of 2023. The move did not materialize, but he believed Gallagher could fit well into the high-energy style he aims to implement at Tottenham. The 46-year-old Italian believes there are already players in the squad who can adapt to his approach.
Among them is Xavi Simons, another £55 million signing who joined from Leipzig in August. Despite his potential, Simons has not been utilized to his full capabilities under previous managers Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.
“the DNA of these players, of this club, is to keep the ball and to try to score,” De Zerbi said ahead of his first game as Spurs boss against Sunderland.
Tottenham currently sit in the relegation zone following West Ham’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday. The club is still in the race to sign Liverpool left back Andy Robertson, who has confirmed he will leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Spurs were close to securing Robertson in January when Frank was their manager, as they sought to add experience and leadership to the team. However, the deal fell through because Liverpool faced injuries and could not find suitable replacements.
Key Players and Tactical Approach
- Conor Gallagher: As a former Chelsea star, Gallagher has the potential to regain his form under De Zerbi’s guidance. His leadership qualities and technical skills make him an important asset for the team.
- Xavi Simons: Another high-profile signing, Simons needs to be given more opportunities to showcase his abilities. His performance could significantly impact Tottenham’s attacking play.
- Roberto De Zerbi: The new manager brings a fresh perspective and a clear vision for the team. His focus on maintaining possession and creating scoring chances is crucial for Tottenham’s survival in the Premier League.
Future Prospects
With De Zerbi at the helm, the focus is on rebuilding the squad’s morale and implementing a cohesive playing style. The manager’s emphasis on keeping the ball and pressing high could provide the platform for Gallagher and other key players to thrive.
As the season progresses, the success of De Zerbi’s strategies will be closely watched. The challenge for Gallagher is to reclaim his form and become a pivotal figure in Tottenham’s quest to avoid relegation. With the right support and opportunities, he could once again prove himself as one of the league’s top midfielders.
