Devastating Explosion Rocks Rome, Leaving Homes Destroyed and Residents Hospitalised
A powerful explosion has ripped through a residential area in Rome, Italy, causing significant damage to multiple apartment buildings and forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents. Emergency services were swiftly on the scene, transporting three individuals to hospital and initiating a large-scale rescue and relief operation.
The incident occurred in the Piana del Sole neighbourhood, specifically at the intersection of Via Tavagnasco and Via Ciglie. Local media reports suggest the blast was triggered by the detonation of gas cylinders believed to have been buried in a backyard garden. The force of the explosion was so immense that debris was reportedly found scattered up to 660 feet (approximately 200 metres) from the epicentre.

Critical Injuries and Widespread Displacement
The elderly couple who owned the property where the gas canisters were reportedly buried have sustained severe injuries. The 84-year-old husband and his 86-year-old wife were transported to the nearby Sant’Eugenio Hospital in a critical condition. Identified as Michele and Chiara De Bari, both suffered extensive burns covering at least 20% of their bodies. While their injuries are serious, initial reports indicate they are not considered life-threatening.
In addition to the elderly couple, a 24-year-old man was also taken to hospital for evaluation. This occurred as firefighters worked tirelessly to rescue individuals trapped within the rubble of the damaged buildings. The aftermath of the explosion has rendered five buildings uninhabitable, leaving 29 people displaced and in urgent need of temporary accommodation.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Devastating Blast
Residents in the vicinity described a terrifying ordeal. Cristian, a local who was at home when the explosion occurred, recounted the moment of impact. “We were at home, and at a certain point we heard thunder and a piece of wood flew into our kitchen,” he told an Italian newspaper. “The blast also bent the windows in our house.”
Another resident, Giorgia, arrived at the scene to find a stark reality. She reported being told by firefighters that “the windows and doors had exploded.” Upon her arrival, she immediately noticed the “strong smell of gas.”
Ongoing Investigation and Official Response
Multiple fire crews and police units were dispatched to the affected area to manage the immediate aftermath and begin their investigations. Officials remain on-site, conducting a formal inquiry to determine the precise cause of the explosion.
Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, expressed his gratitude to the emergency services for their rapid response. He indicated that firefighters would be responsible for establishing the cause, but preliminary findings point towards a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder being the source. “The power of the explosion is quite impressive,” Mayor Gualtieri stated. “The surrounding buildings are damaged, some will be uninhabitable. We need to figure out how many people will need to be moved.” The focus now shifts to supporting those affected and ensuring the safety and stability of the surrounding structures.
