Hugo Savala Embraces New Role as Sydney Roosters’ Mr Fix-It
Hugo Savala may still feel a part of him is in the halves, but for now, the utility player is content to be playing in the centres as the Sydney Roosters’ go-to solution. His journey through different positions has been a testament to his adaptability and dedication to the team.
Savala started in the halves for most of last year, showcasing his skills as a playmaker. However, with the arrival of marquee signing Daly Cherry-Evans over the summer, he found himself on the sidelines. Coach Trent Robinson experimented with Savala in various positions during the pre-season, but it was when Billy Smith suffered another injury in round four that Savala found his new home in the centres.
In the Roosters’ come-from-behind victory over Newcastle on Sunday, Savala scored a try-scoring double, marking his third game of the season. This performance highlighted his ability to contribute significantly from the outside back position.

“I’ve been training everywhere in the pre-season, and ‘Robbo’ has tested me, so I’m ready for whatever’s to come. I love playing at centre,” Savala said. “Billy helped me throughout the week in the preparation for the game. He’s done that the last two weeks.”
Despite his tall build, which is more typical of an outside back, Savala has consistently expressed his preference for the halves. However, he is currently working on refining his skills as a playmaker and is seen as the next option should Cherry-Evans or Walker face injuries.
“Obviously, there’s a half and a five-eighth inside me, but I was playing left centre (against Newcastle) and that’s the role I was doing,” Savala explained. “I’m still working on my kicking at training and my ball playing.”

For now, Savala is happy to continue serving as Robinson’s Mr Fix-It, adapting to whatever role the coach requires. With Smith expected to return from his knee injury in the coming weeks, Savala might need to find yet another position to play.
“I could play wherever he (Robinson) wants me to,” Savala said. “He’s tested me a lot the last two years in training and in pre-season, so I’m ready for whatever.”
This flexibility and willingness to adapt are key traits for any player looking to thrive in a competitive environment like the NRL. Savala’s journey through different roles highlights not only his versatility but also his commitment to the team’s success. As he continues to develop his skills and embrace new challenges, Savala remains a valuable asset to the Sydney Roosters.
