Rory McIlroy Faces Crucial Test at Masters
Rory McIlroy has taken a decisive step towards addressing the challenges he faced during the second round of the Masters, heading straight to the practice ground range to refine his game. The Northern Irish golfer found himself in a precarious position after losing a six-shot lead, leaving the defense of his Masters title hanging in the balance.
Just 24 hours earlier, McIlroy had looked unstoppable, taking a historic 36-hole lead that was the largest in the tournament’s history. His performance was so dominant that all of his competitors were scoring under par, with nine players immediately behind him posting sub-70 rounds. However, McIlroy managed only a one-over 71, struggling notably at Amen Corner.
The issues off the tee, which he had successfully managed throughout the week, cost him dearly. Recognizing the need for improvement, he immediately went to the range to work on his technique ahead of his final-group pairing with Cameron Young, who shot a Masters-best 65, finishing at 11 under par.
“I think the course was definitely gettable, and there were a lot of good scores out there. The quality of the chasing pack is obvious,” McIlroy remarked. “There are a lot of guys still in with a chance tomorrow. I’m still tied for the best score going into tomorrow, so I can’t forget that, but I do know I’m going to have to be better if I want to have a chance to win. I’m in the final group. I just need to go to the range and try to figure it out a little bit.”
McIlroy entered Augusta National’s notoriously challenging Amen Corner stretch at 13 under, three shots ahead but barely holding on. He exited it just one shot behind Young after a double bogey-bogey-par on the stretch. He pulled a seven iron into the water at the 11th, missed the green at the next hole, and drove into the trees at the 13th.

“When you’re not quite feeling it, you struggle. You have to dig deep, and I felt like I did that on the front nine and made a lot of good par saves,” he added. “I missed a couple of chances on holes eight and nine, and then I thought I turned the round around with the birdie on 10. I felt like I hit a pretty good second shot on 11, but it just drifted on the wind a little bit and went in the water. Those two holes (11 and 12) weren’t great.”
“However, I felt like I bounced back pretty well with the birdies on 14 and 15. It would have been nice to play those last few holes and not make that bogey on 17, but, you know, I still have a great chance.”
Key Moments from the Second Round
- McIlroy started the day with a strong lead, looking poised to dominate the tournament.
- Despite his struggles at Amen Corner, he showed resilience by making several key par saves.
- His performance on the front nine was commendable, with multiple successful par saves.
- The birdie on the 10th hole was a turning point, helping to regain some momentum.
- The setbacks on holes 11 and 12 were costly, but he managed to recover with birdies on 14 and 15.
- The bogey on the 17th hole was a disappointment, but McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances.
As the final round approaches, McIlroy will need to address the issues that plagued him during the second round. With a strong field of competitors still in contention, the pressure is on for the world number two to deliver a performance that matches his reputation. The outcome of the Masters will depend heavily on how well he can adjust and perform under the weight of expectation.
