Rory McIlroy Sees Masters Lead Shrink as Cameron Young Surges Up Leaderboard

Rory McIlroy’s Struggles and the Rising Challenge at Augusta National

Rory McIlroy faced a challenging day on the golf course at Augusta National, where his struggles off the tee limited his chances to maintain his six-shot lead. Despite the high-scoring day, it became clear that McIlroy’s advantage was shrinking as his competitors capitalized on the opportunities presented.

McIlroy started the day with a bogey at the first hole, but he managed to recover with a birdie at the third. This helped him remain level par through the first nine holes. However, this performance meant that his lead had been reduced to just one shot, with several players now within striking distance.

Cameron Young, who had struggled on Thursday by being four over after seven holes, made a significant move. By the 14th hole, he was at 11 under par, showing a strong comeback. Meanwhile, Haotong Li and Shane Lowry were also two shots behind McIlroy. Lowry’s round was particularly notable, as he recorded his second Masters hole-in-one of the week, which energized his performance.

Scottie Scheffler, the defending Masters champion and world number one, also made a strong showing. He shot a career-low 65 in the Masters, coming close to breaking the course record at one point. Scheffler’s front nine was especially impressive, as he covered the first nine holes in 31 strokes, including an eagle on the second hole and three consecutive birdies on the back nine.

Despite his strong start, Scheffler’s momentum slowed on the back nine. He failed to take full advantage of the two par fives, eventually finishing at seven under par. A missed eight-foot putt on the 17th hole ended any hopes of a course record, but he managed to save par on the final hole after having to hack out from under a tree.

“I gave myself a lot of opportunities and I felt like I took advantage of those on the front nine, and then back nine I did a lot of good things and was really, really close to seeing a lot go in,” Scheffler said. “It definitely could have been lower, but I did what I needed to do. I went out and executed to give myself some opportunities. More of that tomorrow and I think I’ll be in a good spot.”

Shane Lowry, known for his remarkable hole-in-ones, added another to his collection during this round. His second Masters ace came on the sixth hole, making him the first player to achieve multiple hole-in-ones at Augusta National. Lowry previously aced the 16th hole in the final round of 2016. He has also achieved aces on the 17th hole at Sawgrass in 2022 and the seventh hole at Pebble Beach in January 2025, two of the most iconic par threes in golf.

As the tournament progresses, McIlroy will need to find a way to regain control of his game. The competition is fierce, and with players like Scheffler, Young, Li, and Lowry all within reach, the pressure is mounting. McIlroy’s ability to adapt and improve off the tee will be crucial in determining whether he can hold onto his lead or if he will be overtaken by the rising challengers.
