Beloved Matriarch Marie Keane Passes Away, Leaving a Lasting Legacy
The Keane family is in deep mourning following the peaceful passing of their matriarch, Marie Keane, on Friday. Marie, a devoted mother to five children, including the renowned football star Roy Keane, died surrounded by her loving family.
Roy, who is known for his reserved public persona, particularly when it comes to his family life, shared a poignant tribute to his mother. In 2022, he had shared a selfie with Marie, affectionately captioning it with the sentiment that she was ‘the only boss’ he listened to. This deep respect and affection were reiterated in the wake of her passing, as he shared another touching photograph of them together, telling his mum, ‘You’ll always be the boss’.
The outpouring of support for the former professional footballer during this difficult time has been immense, with many well-known faces offering their condolences. Among those who have rallied around Roy and his family are Dearbhla Mescal, Gary Neville, Robbie Keane, and David Beckham, underscoring Marie’s impact and the respect her family commands.
A death notice published on RIP.ie detailed the sad news: “The death has occurred of Marie Keane (née Lynch) on March 27th 2026, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and in the tender loving care of the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Anne’s Ward at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice.”

The notice further elaborated on Marie’s cherished relationships: “Marie (née Lynch); dearly loved wife of the late Maurice (Mossie) and beloved mother of Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy, and Pat. Predeceased by her brother Pat, her niece Estella, and her nephew Thomas.” It also highlighted the vast network of loved ones who will miss her dearly: “Sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends.”

Details for Marie’s funeral have also been announced. Her Requiem Mass is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 31st, at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree. This location holds significant sentimental value for the family, as it was also the venue where Marie married her late husband, Maurice, back in 1963.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Marymount Hospice, a cause that clearly held importance for Marie and her family, given the tender care she received there.

While Roy has maintained a private stance on his family life, the profound bond he shared with his parents was evident during an emotional moment on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast. Speaking about his family, Roy became visibly moved, offering a rare glimpse into the depth of his personal connections.
Marie’s husband and Roy’s father, Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane, passed away in 2019 at the age of 79, following a stroke he suffered in 2018. The strength and unity of the Keane family, forged through years of love and shared experiences, will undoubtedly be a source of comfort as they navigate this period of profound loss. Marie’s memory will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the countless lives she touched.
