Royal Pair Shine at BAFTAs Amidst Family Scrutiny
The Prince and Princess of Wales made a striking public appearance at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) in London, showcasing their customary elegance and poise. This marked their first joint public engagement since Prince Andrew’s recent arrest, a situation that clearly weighed on Prince William’s mind.

When asked about the best picture nominee Hamnet, a film delving into the poignant story of Shakespeare’s son and his family’s grief, Prince William confessed he hadn’t yet seen it. “I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment. I will save it,” he remarked candidly on the red carpet, hinting at the emotional toll the film might take.
Princess Catherine, however, had braved the deeply moving narrative the previous evening. She shared her experience, admitting, “I thought it was a bad idea, actually. Ended up with very puffy eyes. It was so beautifully shot. The music as well. The score is fantastic.” The film, which chronicles the tragic death of Shakespeare’s young son, clearly left a profound impression on the Princess.

As President of BAFTA, Prince William was on hand to present Dame Donna with a BAFTA Fellowship, the organisation’s highest and most esteemed honour. This award recognised Dame Donna’s significant achievements, particularly as the first British woman to head a major Hollywood studio. Her career has been marked by championing critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Bridesmaids, Get Out, The Holdovers, and the BAFTA best picture winner, Oppenheimer.
William’s Powerful Tribute to Creative Industries
During his address, Prince William underscored the vital importance of the UK’s creative industries. “Our creative industries are one of this country’s greatest strengths,” he declared, “and I will continue to celebrate and support the talent that makes them shine globally in my role as President of BAFTA.”
His praise for Dame Donna was effusive, highlighting her “exceptional contribution to film” and her role as “a tireless advocate for British talent abroad, ensuring our storytellers, performers and creators are seen, supported and celebrated on the world stage.”
The Prince elaborated on Dame Donna’s impact, stating, “Her determination and commitment have driven her to become one of the most influential and respected figures in the entertainment industry.” He reiterated her pioneering status as the first British woman to lead a major Hollywood studio and her current leadership at NBCUniversal Entertainment.
William lauded her “transformative leadership and unwavering commitment to creative partnership,” which he credited with bringing “some of this century’s most iconic films to the big screen and to audiences around the world.” He further acknowledged her role in shaping culture through film and her connection to beloved franchises. Crucially, he also recognised her dedication to inclusion and mentorship, noting her initiatives to broaden access to screen arts careers and support women in leadership, deeming this work “crucial.”
The ceremony then featured a montage of tributes to Dame Donna from esteemed figures in the film world, including celebrated directors Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan, as well as Hollywood star Tom Cruise and acclaimed actress Emma Thompson. Thompson, appearing with a refreshingly natural, make-up-free look, even quipped, “I look like Boris Johnson,” drawing laughter from the Prince and Princess.
Dame Donna Langley received a well-deserved standing ovation and expressed her gratitude to Prince William for his “incredibly gracious introduction.” The evening served as a powerful reminder of the global reach and impact of British talent within the creative sector.
