Ruturaj Gaikwad ‘threatened’ by Sanju Samson? Experts doubt CSK captaincy after PBKS defeat

CSK’s Struggles in IPL 2026: A Closer Look at the Team Dynamics

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have started their campaign in IPL 2026 on a disappointing note, suffering another defeat in their second match against Punjab Kings. While the team’s performance on the field has drawn attention, there is now a growing discussion about the internal dynamics within the dressing room.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan and New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull shared their insights on the team’s situation during a Cricbuzz show. They suggested that the arrival of Sanju Samson might be creating pressure on the current skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Vaughan posed the question to Doull: “What about the captain, Gaikwad? Do you think he feels threatened [by Samson]?”

Doull responded without hesitation: “Absolutely.”

Vaughan elaborated on his thoughts, highlighting the challenges faced by Gaikwad as one of the youngest captains in the league. He noted that while the team supports Gaikwad, the decision to bring in Samson—a proven captain and wicketkeeper—has added an extra layer of complexity.

“Gaikwad has done it a bit now, and you kind of go, ‘Go on, we’re gonna back you, you’re the captain.’ But by the way, we’re signing Sanju, who’s a very good captain and he’s a keeper. And guess what? We’ve had a keeper who was a captain for a long period of time and did very well, and we’re gonna try and replace him. But you carry on captaining and hope it doesn’t affect you,” Vaughan explained.

Sanju Samson’s Challenges

Sanju Samson, known for his leadership skills with Rajasthan Royals, where he led them to the 2022 IPL final, has not had a smooth start with CSK. So far, he has scored single-digit runs in both matches played.

Doull discussed the pressure Samson is facing after his high-profile trade:

“Tough challenge for him, and it’s one of those situations you find yourself in when you’re not desperate, but when you want to play for a certain side and you want to put on a show. I mean, he is a South boy, isn’t he? He is a Kerala boy. He wants to put on a show. I think he feels like he’s more at home.”

He added:

“In the South, the trade happened; it was a big trade as we’ve talked about, you’ve lost 2 high quality players for one player. So the pressure’s quite enormous, the pressure of maybe what they see him as in the future as well. But he just got to think back to a few weeks ago, doesn’t he? And how was he playing in the last 3 games [in the T20 World Cup].”

The Match Performance

In the recent game, Chennai Super Kings posted a formidable total of 209/5, thanks to contributions from several key players. Ruturaj Gaikwad played a crucial role, scoring 43 runs off 73 deliveries, while Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube provided the finishing touches with 64 runs in the final five overs.

However, Punjab Kings managed to chase down the target with five wickets remaining. Shreyas Iyer led the charge with a quick 50 off 29 balls, supported by a 59-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera. Contributions from Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Cooper Connolly were also vital in their victory.

Despite the high score, CSK failed to defend, leading to criticism not only for their bowling but also for their overall leadership. The team is now under scrutiny as they look to regroup and find their rhythm in the upcoming matches.
