Ryan Gosling has stepped away from a project directed by the Oscar-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The decision, confirmed by Deadline, is attributed to a scheduling conflict. Gosling, who is 45 years old, was set to appear in this undisclosed film, which had initially been scheduled for a release on 12 June 2027 but was later moved to 19 November 2027. The Daniels, known for their work on Everything Everywhere All At Once, were planning to start filming in Los Angeles later this summer.
Gosling’s schedule could not accommodate the revised timeline. Although no specific reason was provided, it is worth noting that the actor has recently completed an extensive global press tour for his newly released sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary. This adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel follows a man who awakens on a spaceship, light-years from home with no memory of his identity or purpose. The film was a box office success, earning $300.8 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. It surpassed Avatar: Fire and Ash to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year. James Cameron’s movie had previously dominated the box office for the first three months of the year.

In a four-star review of the film, The Independent’s film critic Clarisse Loughrey praised Project Hail Mary as “effervescently likeable as it can get.” The news of Gosling’s departure is likely to disappoint fans of the Daniels, who received seven awards, including Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars, for their previous film, Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Deadline reports that Universal and the Daniels are still on track to meet their targeted dates despite Gosling’s exit. There are expected to be several contenders vying for the role that Gosling has left open.

Gosling is still set to star in another major film next year, Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled for a May release. Directed by Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind Deadpool & Wolverine, this movie will be separate from the nine-film Skywalker franchise. Gosling announced the news in April last year during a Star Wars celebration event in Tokyo, where he expressed his excitement about being part of the project. He said, “Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it … It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us … All we can hope for is: ‘May the fans be with us.’”
