Ryan Gosling Steps Down from Upcoming Film Project
Ryan Gosling, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films such as Barbie, The Fall Guy, and The Notebook, has decided not to appear in the upcoming film directed by the Oscar-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The movie, which is still without a title, was expected to be a major project from the creators of Everything Everywhere All at Once.
According to industry sources who spoke to Deadline, Gosling, 45, has withdrawn from the Universal film. This decision comes after the production team had initially planned to shoot the movie in Los Angeles to take advantage of the California Tax Credit. However, the timing of the project has proven to be a challenge, as the film was set to begin filming this summer, which could conflict with Gosling’s current schedule.
Despite Gosling’s departure, the Daniels remain on track with their untitled project, which is scheduled for a release date of November 19, 2027. Industry insiders have suggested that finding a replacement for Gosling should not be an issue, given his strong support for the script.
What We Know About the Film
Details about the storyline are still scarce, but Kwan, one of the directors, shared some insights with Collider at SXSW. He described the film as “very existential” and a “fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart.” He also mentioned that the film will include elements that fans of the Daniels’ previous work would expect.
Kwan explained that the changing cultural landscape has influenced the story. He said, “One of the reasons why it’s taking so long is because what we’re feeling and what we’re hearing from the world is very complex and really nuanced, and there’s so much paradox.”
To address these complexities, the filmmakers have taken extra time to ensure that all these elements are thoughtfully integrated into the film.
New Talent in the Mix
An insider told The Hollywood Reporter that the film will feature an ensemble cast of younger actors, many of whom are around high school age. This suggests that the movie may focus on themes relevant to younger audiences while maintaining the unique style that the Daniels are known for.

Gosling’s Current Projects
Gosling has been busy promoting his recent film Project Hail Mary, an Amazon MGM release that features Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung. The sci-fi film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has grossed over $334 million worldwide since its March 2022 release.
In addition to his work on Project Hail Mary, Gosling is set to star in Star Wars: Starfighter, a new installment in the George Lucas franchise. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film will also feature Amy Adams and Mia Goth. It is scheduled for a theatrical release next year.
