Ryanair’s Free Baggage Allowance May Double Under New EU Rules

Changes to Ryanair’s Baggage Policy for Irish Travellers

Irish travellers flying with Ryanair may soon see an improvement in their cabin baggage allowance without having to pay extra. Currently, passengers on standard fares are allowed one small personal item free of charge, while any additional cabin baggage incurs extra fees. However, recent developments at the European Union level have already prompted the airline to slightly increase the size of the complimentary bag.

Passengers can now bring a personal item measuring up to 40 x 30 x 20cm, which represents a 20% increase from the previous limit of 40 x 20 x 25cm. This adjustment is a direct result of new EU regulations aimed at improving the passenger experience.

Potential Further Improvements

More changes could be coming soon. In January, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to grant all passengers the right to carry an additional small case along with the current complimentary underseat bags. Under the proposed measures, travellers would be entitled to bring one underseat item—such as a handbag, backpack, or laptop—alongside a second piece of hand luggage. This second item would have combined dimensions of up to 100cm (length, width, and height) and weigh up to 7kg.

If these proposals are approved, the new regulations would apply to all flights departing from or arriving into EU airports operated by EU-based carriers. This means that the majority of short-haul flights from Ireland would be affected.

However, the proposals still need to be signed off by the European Council before they become law. Additionally, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are pushing for new regulations to ensure that children under 12 are seated next to an accompanying adult at no extra cost.

Seat Allocation for Families

At present, Ryanair requires that any adult travelling with children under the age of 12 must reserve seats in advance to ensure they can be seated together. Up to four children per adult on the same booking will be allocated a reserved seat at no extra cost.

This policy aims to make family travel more convenient and less stressful, particularly for parents who are travelling with young children.
