Salah’s Liverpool Departure: A Storm Brewing?
The announcement of Mohamed Salah’s impending departure from Liverpool at the end of the season has sparked debate, with former Manchester United captain Roy Keane warning that the situation could turn “nasty” for the Egyptian star, mirroring the less-than-ideal farewell experienced by Trent Alexander-Arnold last campaign.
Keane, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, expressed his reservations about the timing of Salah’s revelation. “I’m not sure it’s ideal, the timing,” he stated. “I don’t know why he doesn’t wait until the end of the season.” He drew a parallel to Alexander-Arnold’s situation last year, where speculation about his future, and subsequent dips in form, led to fan discontent.

“Last year, there was a kind of noise coming out, ‘This could be my last game at Old Trafford.’ He played all those games last year before he signed his new deal,” Keane recalled. He went on to elaborate on the potential ramifications for Salah: “If Liverpool finish the season really badly, and they’ve not been great, and he’s in games – we saw with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a little bit last year, different circumstances, Trent, is he leaving, then he has a bad game against United.”

The former Republic of Ireland international believes that if Liverpool’s form falters in the final months of the season, and Salah isn’t performing at his usual high standard, fans might begin to question his commitment. “Say they come off in the last month or two and they don’t do anything in the cup matches, and he’s not at his best, they’ll be saying ‘he’s already left the club, his heart’s not in it’,” Keane posited. “I think that can turn a bit nasty.”
Keane suggested that the fanfare surrounding a potential farewell parade might be misplaced if the team isn’t enjoying a successful end to the season. “It’d be different if they were like Arsenal and they were top of the league, you’re going to win the league like last year, but I’m not sure about the timing,” he commented. “I don’t know why you don’t just wait until the end of the season and go ‘I’ve done my bit’.” He added that Liverpool have enough on their plate without adding “another circus act,” referencing how the end of the previous season became “a bit silly” and could lead to fans turning on the player.
The Shadow of Alexander-Arnold’s Farewell
It’s undeniable that Mohamed Salah has etched his name into Liverpool folklore. His prolific goalscoring record, instrumental in securing two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, has earned him deep affection from the Anfield faithful. However, the experience of Trent Alexander-Arnold last season serves as a stark reminder that even years of dedicated service do not always guarantee a smooth departure.
A segment of Liverpool supporters expressed their displeasure towards Alexander-Arnold shortly after his exit was confirmed. Boos were heard at Anfield during his substitution against Arsenal in May, with chants in favour of his replacement, Conor Bradley, echoing around the stadium. The sentiment was so strong that one nightclub, Popworld, even announced it had banned the homegrown defender, highlighting a sense of betrayal felt by a portion of the fanbase.

Many fans were particularly aggrieved by the perception that Alexander-Arnold might be leaving on a free transfer to Real Madrid. While Liverpool ultimately secured a modest £10 million fee from the Spanish giants, the initial speculation fuelled frustration. This situation, however, differed from Salah’s in key aspects. Alexander-Arnold’s local ties to Liverpool and his potential move to Real Madrid – a club with a history of poaching Liverpool’s stars and triumphing over them in major European finals – added layers of complexity to the narrative.
Salah’s Own Words and Future Prospects
Mohamed Salah himself has spoken about his departure, expressing deep gratitude and emotional ties to the club and its supporters. His agent, Ramy Abbas, has indicated that no firm destination has been decided for the 33-year-old forward.
Salah has been a long-standing target for Saudi Arabian clubs, with Al-Ittihad reportedly making a substantial £150 million bid in the summer of 2023. Interest has also come from clubs in the United States, and with his contract expiring, a move to another European club remains a possibility.
In his farewell message, Salah conveyed his profound connection to Liverpool: “‘Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.'”

He further elaborated on the depth of his feelings: “‘I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club.'” Reflecting on their shared journey, he added, “‘We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.'”
Salah extended his thanks to all who have been part of his journey at Liverpool: “‘I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present. And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.'”
As Liverpool prepares for life without their talisman, the club’s recruitment team will undoubtedly be working diligently to identify suitable replacements. This task, however, is far from straightforward, given Salah’s immense contribution and the void he will leave behind.
