Sam Champion’s Heart Scare: Hospital Update

Sam Champion Recovering After Emergency Heart Procedure

Good Morning America’s beloved weatherman, Sam Champion, has shared a reassuring update with fans from his hospital bed, confirming he has undergone an emergency heart procedure. The 64-year-old underwent the operation in New York following a sudden health scare that prompted immediate medical attention.

Champion, known for his sunny disposition and expert weather forecasts, managed a smile and a wave in a photograph shared on Instagram, assuring his followers that he anticipates a “full recovery.” The image provided a welcome sense of relief to those who have followed his career and personal life.

He took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him. “Thank you Dr. Stam Lerakis and Dr. Sharma and the WONDERFUL team of nurses at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital!” Champion posted. He further elaborated on the events leading up to the procedure:

“Many of you know I had a nuclear stress test last Thursday. And we found some things that needed to be taken care of, so today I went into the cardiac catheterization laboratory… and we took care of it. Thanks to these procedures, I am well and expected to make a full recovery.”

The news was met with an outpouring of support from colleagues and fans alike.

  • Robin Roberts, a fellow anchor on Good Morning America, expressed her unwavering support, writing, “You know I am here if you need anything at all! Speedy recovery on the way!”

  • Al Roker, from The Today Show, offered his well wishes, stating, “Sam the Man. Glad you are on the mend, my friend.”

This isn’t the first time Champion has faced health challenges. In a previous incident earlier this year, the GMA star underwent surgery for skin cancer, which resulted in a noticeable scar under his right eye.

Past Health Battles: Skin Cancer

The skin cancer diagnosed was a nodular basal cell carcinoma. The surgery involved removing the cancerous spot from his right cheek. His surgeon also employed laser treatment to address precancerous skin areas around his face.

Champion has been open about his history with skin cancer, revealing that this was not his first encounter with the disease. He recalled being diagnosed with skin cancer in his 20s and attributed his past struggles to years of tanning and excessive sunbathing.

“When I’m not bringing you the weather, I love nothing more than being outside,” he shared in a clip previously broadcast on the program.

“I don’t even have any way of counting how many times I had blistering sunburn.”

A New Approach to Sun Safety

In light of his experiences, Sam Champion has adopted a much more cautious approach to sun exposure. He now prioritises protection when enjoying outdoor activities.

“When I’m in a beach chair, I have an umbrella, and I have my sunscreen,” he explained in a social media post. “I don’t think legitimate sunbathing – where you lie in the sun like a lizard – has been a part of my recent past and it won’t be a part of my close-to future, either.” This shift in behaviour underscores the importance of sun safety for everyone.
