Cricket World Cup Drama: Social Media Clash Erupts Amidst Australian Team’s Precarious Position
The ongoing T20 World Cup has not only been a stage for thrilling cricketing action but also for unexpected off-field drama. A prominent Australian cricket content creator, with a substantial following of over 150,000 on Instagram, found himself embroiled in a heated confrontation with a Pakistani influencer. The incident, which has since gone viral, occurred as the Australian team faces an uncertain future in the tournament.
Jake Jeakings, a well-known figure in the Australian cricket social media sphere, travelled to the subcontinent to witness the T20 World Cup firsthand. His experience took a sharp turn when he encountered Saud Jarwar, another notable cricket creator from Pakistan. The interaction escalated quickly when Jarwar attempted to present Jeakings with a piece of sandpaper.
This gesture was clearly intended as a provocative jab, referencing the infamous “sandpaper-gate” scandal that rocked the Australian national cricket team back in 2018. The incident, involving ball-tampering using sandpaper during a Test match, cast a long shadow over Australian cricket.
According to accounts of the encounter, after the two creators introduced themselves, Jarwar playfully announced he had a “special gift” for Jeakings. Jeakings, seemingly anticipating the nature of the “gift,” responded with a pointed question: “Let me guess. It’s sandpaper?”

The situation then rapidly devolved into a heated exchange. Jeakings appeared visibly angered by the taunt, reacting by taking Jarwar’s microphone. “Do you want me to throw your mic away?” Jeakings was heard asking in a furious tone. He further declared, “Don’t ever come up to me like that. Don’t ever come up to me like that again.” The Australian creator also physically pushed Jarwar backwards, his irritation evident.
The Pakistani creator, who commands a significant following of 134,000 on TikTok, retaliated, stating, “Don’t push me. Don’t push me.”
Jeakings is known for his somewhat larrikin persona on social media, often engaging in light-hearted banter and teasing players and fans globally. However, in this instance, the humour seemed to have evaporated.
Jarwar then shifted his focus to defending his national team’s players, stating defiantly, “Stop trolling my players, OK?”
Video footage capturing the entirety of the pair’s intense interaction was subsequently shared on Jarwar’s social media account, sparking a flurry of reactions and opinions from cricket fans worldwide.
- Comments from social media users reflected a divided audience:
- One user remarked, “(The) gift was personal.”
- Another expressed support for the Australian creator, stating, “Whoever this Jack guy is, he’s right. I am on his side.”
Australia’s World Cup Fate Hangs in the Balance
This fiery clash between content creators unfolds against the backdrop of significant uncertainty for the Australian cricket team’s prospects in the T20 World Cup. Following an unexpected defeat to Sri Lanka, the reigning champions now find their progression to the next stage precariously balanced.
The team’s fate is no longer entirely in their own hands. A crucial element of their qualification hinges on the outcome of the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland. If Zimbabwe, a side that recently secured a victory against Australia, manages to defeat Ireland, Mitch Marsh’s men will be eliminated from the tournament.
However, even if Zimbabwe falters against Ireland, Australia’s hopes are not yet secured. They would then require Zimbabwe to also fall short in their subsequent match against Sri Lanka. This intricate web of results means that Australian supporters are anxiously watching other fixtures, hoping for favourable outcomes to keep their World Cup dream alive. The pressure is immense, and the team will be relying on a combination of their own performance and the results of other matches to advance.
