Sarah Michelle Gellar: The “Never Say Never” Approach to On-Screen Reunions and Her Thrilling Return to Villainy
Hollywood’s enduring power couple, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr., have captivated audiences for over two decades, their romance blossoming on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer. While their shared on-screen moments, particularly their iconic turns as the Scooby-Doo gang, remain cherished memories for fans, Gellar has recently shed light on the specific conditions that would entice her back into a project with her husband. The answer, it seems, is a delicate balancing act between career and family.
“Never say never,” Gellar stated on the red carpet for her latest project, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. However, she quickly tempered expectations, elaborating on the crucial family consideration. “Not while our children are still in the house because one of us has to be home at all times. Never say never. I’ve learned that one, but not right now.” This candid admission highlights Gellar’s long-held commitment to prioritising her role as a parent.

For much of the past decade, Gellar has intentionally stepped back from the intense glare of the Hollywood spotlight, opting to cultivate a more private life focused on her family. She and Prinze Jr. are parents to two children, Charlotte and Rocky, and Gellar has been admirably open about her dedication to being a present mother over the pursuit of leading roles. This conscious shift in priorities has made her recent resurgence in the acting world all the more deliberate and, for many, incredibly exciting.
Gellar’s career trajectory saw her achieve iconic status in the late 90s and early 2000s with a string of defining performances in films like Scream 2, Cruel Intentions, Scooby-Doo, and The Grudge. Following this period of widespread recognition, she largely retreated from major studio projects, embracing a quieter existence that she now shares with a devoted following of over four million on Instagram.

Her return to acting began with a compelling role in Netflix’s 2022 dark comedy Do Revenge. This was swiftly followed by a leading part in Paramount+’s supernatural drama Wolf Pack, signalling a clear intention to re-engage with the industry on her own terms.
Now, Gellar is diving headfirst into what many are calling one of her most thrilling roles to date. In Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the much-anticipated sequel to the cult 2019 horror hit, she portrays Ursula Danforth. This villainous character allows Gellar to tap into the same sharp, no-nonsense energy that made her portrayal in Cruel Intentions so unforgettable.
Speaking at the film’s premiere, Gellar expressed her sheer delight in embracing the darker side of a character. “So much fun,” she enthused. “Villains get to do all the fun stuff. Like, you know, they get to twist, twirl their mustache and say the crazy shit. Like, it’s fun to be on both sides.” The film, much like its predecessor, leans heavily into its chaotic and satirical “eat-the-rich” themes. However, Gellar is content to let audiences interpret the narrative as they see fit.

“I always say it’s up to the audience, right?” she explained. “If you want to go and just have a crazy ride and see this out there crazy fun movie, then go see this movie. If you want to take the messages then do that… the message is there, but only if you feel like taking it.”
Her performance as Ursula has already garnered significant praise, with some critics hailing it as her best work in two decades. Gellar, characteristically humble, doesn’t entirely disagree. “I mean, I loved it. I don’t disagree,” she admitted. “Ursula was so much fun… it’s one of those things as an actor, you just get lucky.”

For the time being, any on-screen reunion with her husband will remain a future possibility, a dream deferred until the perfect confluence of opportunity and family logistics arises. But, as Sarah Michelle Gellar wisely advises, one should always “never say never.” Her current focus on captivating villainous roles and her unwavering dedication to her family are testament to a career navigated with intention and heart.
