Schiff Sparks Democratic Outrage Over Tulsi Gabbard’s Resignation Amid Husband’s Cancer Battle

A Controversial Response to Tulsi Gabbard’s Resignation

Tulsi Gabbard, the former Director of National Intelligence under the Trump administration, recently announced her resignation due to her husband’s diagnosis with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Her decision to step down has sparked a wave of reactions from fellow Democratic lawmakers, some of whom have faced significant backlash for their responses.

Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and prominent figure in the House Intelligence Committee, was one of the first to respond to Gabbard’s resignation. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote that her “only positive contribution to our nation’s national security is her resignation.” He accused her of politicizing intelligence, dismantling critical agencies, and promoting baseless election fraud claims related to the 2020 presidential election. While Schiff expressed hope for Gabbard’s husband’s recovery, his comments were widely criticized as insensitive and inappropriate.

  • Many users took to social media to express their outrage, calling Schiff’s remarks “celebrating cancer” and questioning his lack of empathy. One user wrote, “If he truly had any sympathy, he would have left the politics out of it.” Another commented, “The woman’s husband was just diagnosed with cancer and you decide that this is the right time to air your personal feelings about the executive branch finally operating properly?”

Criticism of Other Democratic Lawmakers

Other Democratic lawmakers also faced scrutiny for their comments on Gabbard’s resignation. Michigan Representative Shri Thanedar, for example, posted on X: “Tulsi Gabbard is resigning. Good riddance.” He later added that the Iran war was “the biggest display of intelligence incompetence in decades.” His post drew sharp criticism, with users labeling him a “scumbag” and pointing out that Gabbard was stepping down due to her husband’s illness.

  • “GOD FORBID YOU GIVE A SHRED OF DECENCY TO A PERSON LEAVING THEIR POST OF SERVICE FOR A SPOUSE SUFFERING FROM CANCER,” one user wrote. Another said, “Leave it to this monster to celebrate the news.”

California Representative Norma Torres also drew negative attention for her comment on X, where she stated, “Tulsi Gabbard is out, mark it on the bingo card.” She compared the Trump administration’s hiring process to a cycle of picking loud individuals, promoting them quickly, and watching them implode. Users responded by calling her “the worse,” a “ghoul,” and urging her to resign.

A More Empathetic Response

In contrast, Virginia Senator Mark Warner offered a more empathetic response. He posted on X: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with Tulsi Gabbard and her family as her husband battles cancer.” He also praised Gabbard for her service and emphasized the importance of restoring trust in the intelligence community. However, his comments were not without criticism.

  • “This is a time for prayer,” one user wrote. “Not politics you hack.” Another said, “A five minute delay between ‘heartfelt thoughts’ and criticism is generally allowed, even encouraged…but you SOBs politicize everything even bone cancer!”

Support from the Trump Administration

President Donald Trump expressed support for Gabbard on Truth Social, praising her for doing a “great job” in her Cabinet position. He noted that her husband, Abraham, had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer and that she wanted to be with him during his treatment. Trump also mentioned that Gabbard’s principal deputy, Aaron Lukas, would serve as acting director of national intelligence.

Vice President JD Vance called Gabbard a “great asset to the administration, and a dear friend.” Gabbard is the fourth member of Trump’s Cabinet to leave her position, following former Attorney General Pam Bondi, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez–DeRemer.

Personal Reflections

In her resignation letter, Gabbard described her time in office as “a profound honor to serve the American people.” She explained that her husband was facing “major challenges in the coming weeks and months” and that she felt compelled to step away from public service to be by his side. Her decision highlights the difficult balance between professional responsibilities and personal commitments.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the reactions to Gabbard’s resignation reflect the broader tensions within the Democratic Party and the challenges of navigating sensitive issues with both empathy and political strategy.
