Geelong’s Midfield Breakthrough
Geelong’s coach, Chris Scott, has highlighted the performance of the midfield group, which played a crucial role in securing a significant lead against the West Coast Eagles. The team showed a strong finish in the second quarter, allowing them to take control and eventually win by 46 points.
After a closely contested first half, the Cats managed to open up a substantial lead after halftime, showcasing their dominance on the field. This shift was largely attributed to the improved performance of key players, particularly Bailey Smith, who set a new record with 15 inside 50s. His performance was further supported by the inclusion of James Worpel, who allowed Bailey Smith, Max Holmes, and Gryan Miers to play more freely, focusing on their high-speed running abilities.
Scott praised Smith’s efforts, noting that his running power has been a game-changer for the team in recent years. He emphasized that Smith’s ability to handle tight contests early in the game was instrumental in the team’s success.
“He’s going well. His running power as much as anything is helping us. He’s a strong player too. He relished the in-tight contest work early in the game,” Scott said.
“I think he’s got immense running power and that’s been a change to our team in the last couple of years. Him and (Max) Holmes and (Gryan) Miers breaking out into space gave us some good looks.”
Smith, however, remains self-critical, according to Scott, and doesn’t believe he had a perfect game. Despite this, his influence on the team was undeniable.
James Worpel’s Impact
James Worpel also made a significant contribution to the team’s success, recording 20 disposals, five tackles, and a goal. Although the team’s execution wasn’t flawless, Worpel’s presence was a key factor in the Cats’ ability to gain control of the contest and clearances for an extended period.
- “We brought him in for a specific reason, we saw it today. He’s really good in tight,” Scott remarked.
Worpel’s strengths were well-suited to the venue, providing the team with the option to deploy their hard-running players outside the contest. This strategic move allowed the team to maintain control and ultimately secure a comfortable victory.
Player Availability Updates
Scott also confirmed that it is “very likely” that Patrick Dangerfield will feature in the upcoming match against the Western Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Tyson Stengle is expected to play more minutes in the VFL before making a return to the AFL.
These developments indicate that the team is preparing for future challenges while maintaining a strong focus on performance and strategy. With key players stepping up and new additions contributing effectively, Geelong is poised for continued success in the season ahead.
