Whirlwind Romance: Scottish Waitress to Marry American Fiance After Meeting Him Online and Getting Engaged Within 24 Hours of Their First In-Person Meeting
In a tale that reads like a modern-day rom-com, a Scottish waitress is set to tie the knot with her American fiancé, a mere 24 hours after they first laid eyes on each other in person. Dani Scott, a 22-year-old from Galashiels in Roxburghshire, found her soulmate in Jake, a retail worker from South Carolina, through a most unexpected digital connection: a YouTube video.
The serendipitous encounter began when Jake commented on one of Dani’s posts discussing old-fashioned mobile phones, affectionately known as “dumbphones.” This initial digital interaction blossomed into extensive chats, and just last month, Jake, 24, jetted across the Atlantic to meet Dani in Scotland. The whirlwind romance accelerated at an astonishing pace, culminating in Jake proposing on bended knee just one day after their in-person reunion.
This rapid engagement comes as Dani had only recently called off her wedding to her previous fiancé, Matthew, a few months prior. Despite the swift turnaround and potential concerns from her social circle, Dani is resolute in her decision, eagerly preparing to relocate across the Atlantic following their nuptials scheduled for next summer, 2027.
Dani, a former theology student, acknowledged that her friends harboured reservations about her getting engaged so soon after her previous heartbreak. However, she maintains that the connection with Jake feels undeniably right. Her previous wedding was initially slated for October, and had already been postponed by a month. Yet, the couple ultimately decided to part ways just before the ceremony.
Weeks after this separation, Dani’s digital world intersected with Jake’s. His comment on her “dumbphone” video sparked a conversation that quickly deepened.

“I met Jake through YouTube, a month after splitting from my fiancé, who I broke up with a few weeks before our wedding,” Dani shared. “We both made videos about dumbphones and started chatting. After a few phone calls, we decided we liked each other, even though he’s in America, and I’m in Scotland.”
She elaborated on the unique connection they share, saying, “I like that he sees the world differently to other people. He’s very gentle, kind, and really into nature; we just instantly clicked.” Their relationship progressed rapidly, with them officially “dating” a week after their first phone call, despite never having met in person.
Jake’s visit to Scotland in February 2026 marked their first in-person encounter. He spent 12 days with Dani, an experience she described as “amazing, the best 12 days of my life; we just got on so well.”

The proposal occurred on their second day together, during a walk. “The day after we met, Jake proposed, whilst we were on a walk,” Dani recounted. “I knew it was going to happen, but it was still so exciting. Long distance is really difficult; it was much easier to cope before we’d met in person.”
While her family has reportedly warmed to the relationship, some friends remain unconvinced, particularly as they were unaware of her previous split from Matthew. Dani and Matthew had met at university in 2024 while studying theology. They became engaged within six months, with their wedding planned for the previous September. However, as their relationship deteriorated, they initially postponed the ceremony by a month before ultimately calling off the engagement.
Dani’s passion for “dumbphones” forms a significant part of her online presence. Her YouTube channel is dedicated to showcasing the benefits of mobile phones that lack internet access and applications, advocating for their superiority over smartphones.
Jake’s interest was piqued by her content, leading him to comment on one of her videos and express his admiration, even stating that she had inspired him to launch his own channel. He, too, began creating content about dumbphones, and the pair found themselves invested in each other’s digital journeys.
In December, Jake requested Dani’s email address, which soon led to phone calls. These conversations solidified their mutual attraction, prompting them to embark on a long-distance relationship, despite the 4,000-mile geographical divide.
Jake’s visit in February, which spanned 12 days, proved to be the catalyst for their decision to build a future together. Dani, who first shared her story with Talk to The Press, stated, “We’d decided we wanted to get married from the first moment we started talking.”
The couple is keen to expedite their plans to allow Dani to apply for a visa and move to the United States. They anticipate the visa process could take over a year, hence their decision to marry in Jake’s home state of South Carolina in the summer of next year.
Recognising that her family may be unable to attend the wedding due to travel costs, Dani and Jake plan to host a celebratory gathering in Scotland before their wedding day. This will allow her relatives to share in their joy.
Crucially, while her visa is being processed, Dani is unable to visit the U.S. This means her first trip to America will be for her wedding. In the interim, Jake is committed to visiting his Scottish fiancée every few months until they can begin their married life together.
