Dash Crofts, One Half of Iconic Soft Rock Duo Seals & Crofts, Passes Away at 85
Dash Crofts, a celebrated musician and the other half of the beloved 1970s soft rock duo Seals & Crofts, has died at the age of 85. His family confirmed that Crofts passed away on Wednesday due to complications following heart surgery. The news of his passing was first shared by the band’s producer, Louie Shelton, who expressed his sorrow on Facebook, remembering Crofts as a “dear brother and partner in music.”

Seals & Crofts rose to prominence in the 1970s, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape with a string of chart-topping hits. Their signature sound, characterised by smooth harmonies and introspective lyrics, resonated with audiences worldwide. Among their most enduring classics are “Summer Breeze,” “Diamond Girl,” and “Get Closer,” all of which climbed into the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The 1972 album, also titled “Summer Breeze,” achieved double-platinum status, a testament to its widespread appeal and the duo’s musical prowess.
The loss of Dash Crofts marks the second founding member of Seals & Crofts to pass away. Jim Seals, the other half of the iconic duo, died in June 2022 at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. Both musicians hailed from Texas, where their musical journey began.
A Musical Partnership Forged in Texas and Tempered in Los Angeles
Born and raised in the Lone Star State, Dash Crofts and Jim Seals first honed their skills together in the rock band The Champs. This early experience laid the foundation for their future collaboration. In 1969, they relocated to Los Angeles and embarked on a new chapter, forming the soft rock group that would eventually bear their names.
Within Seals & Crofts, both members contributed significantly to the creative process. They shared vocal duties and co-wrote the majority of their material. Crofts brought his talents to the guitar and mandolin, while Seals showcased his versatility on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and saxophone. This instrumental synergy, combined with their songwriting chemistry, was a cornerstone of their distinctive sound.
Faith, Music, and Advocacy: The Baháʼí Influence
Beyond their musical achievements, Dash Crofts and Jim Seals were also vocal advocates for the Baháʼí Faith. This spiritual tradition centres on the principle of the oneness of God and humanity, advocating for universal peace and understanding. The duo frequently infused their songs with themes inspired by their faith, using their platform to share its teachings and ideals. It was not uncommon for them to engage with concertgoers after their performances, discussing their beliefs and distributing literature, demonstrating a deep commitment to their spiritual convictions.
Later Years and Enduring Legacies
Seals & Crofts officially disbanded in 1981, but the musical bond between Crofts and Seals proved resilient. They reunited for a period from 1989 to 1992, and their final collaborative album, “Traces,” was released in 2004.
During the band’s hiatus, Crofts explored his own musical path, releasing a solo album titled “Today” in 1998. He also found solace and a different kind of connection with the land, working with horses on a farm in Texas.
Dash Crofts married Billie Lee Day in 1969, having met her in their earlier band, The Dawnbreakers. Together, they raised two daughters, Amelia Dailey and Lua Crofts. The family’s journey took them across borders, living in Mexico, Australia, and eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee.
The musical legacy of Dash Crofts continues to resonate through his daughters, both of whom are accomplished vocalists. Amelia Dailey, in 2010, formed a musical trio named the Humming Birds alongside Juliet Crossley, Jim Seals’ daughter, and Genevieve Dozier, the daughter of Seals & Crofts’ engineer, Joey Brogan. Lua Crofts, meanwhile, began touring in 2018 with Brady Seals, Jim Seals’ cousin, as the group Seals & Crofts 2. This project celebrated their fathers’ music while also showcasing their own original compositions.
Dash Crofts is survived by his wife, Billie Lee Day, and their two daughters. His contributions to music and his dedication to his beliefs have left an enduring impact on many.
