“Secure Your Place”: Port’s Test for the Young Guard

Port Adelaide’s Transition Phase and the Pressure on New Talent

Port Adelaide’s current approach to managing its playing list is being described as a period of transition rather than a full-scale rebuild, according to assistant coach Stuart Dew. The team, which will face St Kilda in the final match of Gather Round at Adelaide Oval on Sunday night, is focusing on exploring new possibilities within its squad while maintaining high expectations for its younger players.

Dew emphasized that the club is not simply going through the motions but is actively looking to develop its talent. He said: “The growth, you never want to put a ceiling on anything. Obviously with some injuries, we’re exposing our list—so you have got to make the most of the opportunity and not waste it.”

This phase of exploration includes experimenting with different selections and positions played by players. While the team is forced into this situation due to injuries, Dew added that there is still a clear expectation for the players coming into the team to perform and fulfill their roles effectively.

  • This transition period comes at a time when Port Adelaide has two wins and two losses, entering the clash against St Kilda (one win, three losses) with almost a quarter of its squad sidelined due to injuries.
  • Key players such as captain Connor Rozee, who suffered a severe hamstring tear, will be out for at least another three months.
  • Esava Ratugolea, a key backman, is also dealing with a knee injury, while Sam Powell-Pepper remains several months away from returning after a knee reconstruction.

Despite these challenges, there is some positive news for the Power. Todd Marshall, a tall utility player, is set to return for the match against St Kilda after overcoming an ankle injury. His return is expected to bring more experience and flexibility to the team.

“Toddy coming back in is good for us, a little bit more experience and he can be flexible,” Dew said. “He’s good in the air, his skills for a big man are really good and obviously he can play forward or back if things happen during the game.”

Marshall’s inclusion means that Mitch Zadow will be replaced in the lineup. Meanwhile, St Kilda made their own changes, bringing in Hunter Clark and Hugh Boxshall, while Liam Stocker and Dougal Howard were dropped from the team.

This shift in personnel highlights the ongoing adjustments both teams are making as they navigate the season. For Port Adelaide, the focus remains on developing its young talent while managing the impact of injuries. As the team continues to explore its options, the pressure is on the emerging players to step up and prove themselves on the field. With the right performances, the next generation of Port Adelaide stars could begin to cement their places in the team.
