Thurston Slams Manly’s “Derailed” Season After Seibold Sacking
Legendary playmaker Johnathan Thurston has delivered a stark assessment of the Manly Sea Eagles’ current predicament, suggesting the recent sacking of head coach Anthony Seibold has “completely derailed” their season just three games into a new contract. The shock decision has sent ripples through the NRL, with speculation now mounting over potential replacements, including a familiar face from the Sea Eagles’ past.
Thurston, speaking on Nine’s post-game coverage of the Battle of Brisbane, didn’t mince his words. “I think it’s completely derailed their season three games in,” he stated. “They pulled the trigger so they clearly think that ‘Seibs’ isn’t going to get the best out of this playing group… I think this has completely derailed their season.” He also pointed to the club’s roster as an area requiring scrutiny.
The Sea Eagles confirmed Seibold’s departure on Friday night, a move that comes as a surprise given he had only recently signed a two-year contract extension. This abrupt change in leadership has left the club in a precarious position, not only in terms of coaching but also potentially impacting their playing group’s morale and trajectory for the remainder of the season.
Broncos Assistant Coach in Demand Amidst Manly Coaching Speculation
Meanwhile, the Brisbane Broncos are facing the potential loss of a second assistant coach within a week, with Matt Ballin being heavily linked with a move to the Sea Eagles. Ballin, currently an assistant coach at the Broncos, is reportedly a strong contender to step into the head coaching role at Manly.
The Broncos have already seen defence coach Ben Te’o depart under a cloud, highlighting a period of transition for the Brisbane club. As Ballin was seen on the sidelines at Suncorp Stadium during the Broncos’ recent match, whispers of his potential move to Manly were already circulating.
Ballin boasts a deep connection to the Manly club, having played 217 games for them in his NRL career. He was a key member of the Sea Eagles’ dominant 2008 premiership-winning side, even scoring the opening try in their emphatic 40-0 grand final victory. Notably, Jason King, who was also part of that iconic 2008 team, now holds the position of CEO at Manly, adding another layer to the potential reunion.
Ballin Receives Blessing from Broncos Mentors
Despite the potential disruption to the Broncos’ coaching staff, head coach Michael Maguire and star playmaker Adam Reynolds have both publicly endorsed Ballin’s potential move. Maguire, when questioned about the prospect of losing Ballin, expressed his desire for his staff to “excel in whatever it is that they do and what they wanna do.” He added with a laugh, “One thing I know, Matty’s a great human, great person, and those things come to people who work hard, and if it’s the right time, it’s the right time.”
Reynolds echoed these sentiments, acknowledging that losing another assistant coach so soon after Te’o’s exit would be disappointing. However, he emphasised his happiness for Ballin should he receive the opportunity. “Obviously you don’t want to lose another one, but I like seeing coaches get an opportunity and excel,” the Broncos skipper stated.
Reynolds lauded Ballin’s coaching abilities, describing him as “a great coach” who has made significant contributions to the Broncos. He highlighted Ballin’s leadership by example and his strong understanding of the game, gained from a lengthy playing career at the highest level and apprenticeships under various coaches. “He just does all the little things right,” Reynolds observed. “He understands the game; obviously he’s played at the top level for a long time. He’s done his apprenticeship under a few different coaches now, so he knows different styles as well, and how to get the best out of players. So if he gets the opportunity I’m sure he’ll be ready to take it.”
Other Contenders Emerge for the Manly Coaching Vacancy
The Sea Eagles’ coaching search is reportedly casting a wide net, with other notable figures also being linked to the vacant position. Among those mentioned are:
- Brad Arthur
- Michael Ennis
- Jason Demetriou
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial for the Manly Sea Eagles as they navigate this turbulent period and aim to find a coach who can steer them back on course. The decision to part ways with Seibold so early in his tenure has undoubtedly created a significant challenge, and the club will be hoping to make a swift and effective appointment to minimise further disruption.
