Two Sprint Superstars Shine on Day One of Stawell Invitational
Two of the most promising sprinters in the United States made a strong impression on day one of the Stawell Invitational, showcasing their talent by winning their 120m heats. Christian Coleman and Sha’Carri Richardson, both elite athletes, demonstrated their prowess on the track, setting the stage for an exciting competition.
In the final men’s heat, Christian Coleman narrowly edged out John Howe by just 0.01 of a second. The race was a testament to the high level of competition, with Coleman proving once again why he is considered one of the top sprinters in the world. Meanwhile, Richardson dominated her heat with a time of 13.815 seconds, finishing ahead of Lilliana Hoffman, who started 7.25 metres ahead of her.
Richardson, a 100m silver medallist and 4x100m gold medallist from the 2024 Paris Olympics, expressed her confidence in becoming only the third woman to win the Stawell Gift 120m final from scratch. Her performance in the heat was nothing short of impressive, and watching the bird’s eye view footage of the race made it clear why she feels so optimistic about her chances.
“I reminded me what track and field feels like; love, respect and also fun. I’m having a lot of fun out here with everybody,” Richardson said after the race. “It felt like being a kid again playing tag. I had a great time and it just kind of woke my body up.”
“This being my first time running in 2026, it was like knocking the dust off. Chasing everyone actually made me activate and work on my race pattern, so it was a good first race.”
Despite their strong performances, neither Richardson nor Coleman were the fastest qualifiers in their respective heats. In the women’s category, Charlotte Nielsen set the pace with a time of 13.32 seconds, running off a 9-metre start. On the men’s side, Olufemi Komolafe delivered the fastest heat time of 12.11 seconds, starting off a 5-metre mark.
The competition will continue on Monday, with several key events scheduled throughout the day. Richardson will take part in the women’s semifinals starting at midday (AEST), followed by the men’s semifinals at 12:43pm. The finals are set to begin at 1:45pm for the women and 2:20pm for the men.
