Shoaib Bashir’s County Championship Performance Shows Promise for Test Recall
England spinner Shoaib Bashir has expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity to showcase his skills in the County Championship, following a strong performance that could bolster his case for a Test recall. The 22-year-old, who made his Test debut last July against India at Lord’s, is currently playing in just his fourth match of the season and has already delivered his best County Championship figures.
Bashir took four wickets for 76 runs from his 20 overs in Derbyshire’s match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. This performance marked a significant improvement from his previous county best of three for 67 for Somerset against Hampshire in 2023. Despite his impressive record of 68 wickets in 19 Tests to date, Bashir was overlooked for all five Ashes Tests during England’s 4-1 defeat, with batting all-rounder Will Jacks being selected as the sole spinning option.
To gain more regular red-ball opportunities and push for a Test comeback, Bashir chose to leave Somerset for Derbyshire ahead of this season. His decision has already started to pay off, as he has been able to bowl a substantial number of overs in the County Championship, which he believes is crucial for his development as a spinner.
“Just having some game time is quite nice,” Bashir said at Old Trafford. “Getting to bowl overs at this time of year, especially as a spinner, is very important. As I say, I’m still young as a spinner. I feel like they mature quite late.”
He added that the early exposure to the County Championship has been beneficial for his growth. “And for me to get exposure to the County Championship this early in the season and bowl as many overs as I have is very important for my development. And it will stand me in good stead moving forward.”

Bashir’s performance at Old Trafford came after a slow start to the season, where he took only two wickets in the home match against Worcestershire. However, he found his rhythm in the match against Lancashire, taking his first wicket on his 10th ball, which broke a well-set partnership. Josh Bohannon was dismissed for 73, and Bashir followed up with a fine caught and bowled to remove Michael Jones.
Tom Hartley played all round one to give Bashir his third wicket, and the off-spinner then produced a beautiful delivery to dismiss Tom Bailey. This performance is likely to catch the attention of England management as they prepare for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand in June.
“I’m in contact with the (England) management, with the ECB,” Bashir said. “I speak to them pretty regularly. Jeetan Patel (spin bowling coach) is my go-to man, who I work with quite closely. So me and him have regular conversations, chats about different games.”
Bashir’s consistent communication with the England coaching staff highlights his determination to make a strong case for a Test recall. With his recent performance showing promise, there is hope that he can secure a spot in the team for the upcoming series against New Zealand. His ability to adapt to different conditions and execute his plans on the field has already impressed observers, and his continued development could be key to his future in the national team.
