Shoeless Fugitive Escapes Court Transport Van in Manhunt

Manhunt Underway for Escaped Prisoner

Authorities in Dorset are currently conducting a manhunt for a prisoner who managed to escape from a transport van while appearing in court on an assault charge. The individual, identified as John Evans, 32, was last seen fleeing the van at 5:28pm yesterday on Poole Road in Poole, Dorset. He was reportedly without shoes and still had a handcuff on his wrist when he escaped.

Evans appeared at Poole Magistrates’ Court earlier in the day on an assault charge, along with other offenses, and was remanded in custody. While being transported to another location by a private prisoner transport company, he suddenly bolted from the vehicle. This unexpected escape has prompted a significant response from local law enforcement.

Police Response and Public Appeal

In response to the incident, police helicopters were deployed to assist in the search on Thursday night. On the ground, officers have been conducting a detailed search of the area, with an extensive police presence expected until Evans is located.

Dorset Police have issued a public appeal for information, urging anyone who may have seen a man matching Evans’ description to come forward. He is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, with a medium build and ginger hair. He was last seen wearing grey clothing, though authorities believe he may have changed his attire.

Superintendent Joe Pardey of Dorset Police emphasized the importance of public cooperation in locating Evans. He stated:

“I would like to reassure members of the public that we have officers carrying out searches and other enquiries in a bid to locate Jason Evans as soon as possible and return him to lawful custody.”

He also urged the public not to approach Evans directly and to call 999 immediately if they spot him. Members of the community can also contact officers with any concerns.

Reporting Information

If you see Jason Evans, you should dial 999 immediately. Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident number 2:388, or contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

Context of Prison Escapes in the UK

Prison escapes are relatively rare in the UK. According to Statista, only 12 escapes were reported between 2024 and 2025. However, some high-profile cases have drawn significant attention. For example, Daniel Khalife escaped from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023. He attempted to reconnect with an Iranian contact before being found and jailed for 14 years and three months. Khalife managed to escape by clinging to the bottom of a food delivery lorry and was at large for three days.

He was eventually found riding a stolen mountain bike along the canal towpath in Northolt, west London—approximately 14 miles from the prison.
