Punjab Kings Skipper Fined for Slow Over-Rate Offence
Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings, has been fined INR 24 lakh after his franchise was found guilty of a slow-over rate offence during their IPL 2026 match against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This marked the second time that PBKS have been penalised for this issue in the 19th season of the tournament.
Under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, all players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Sub Priyansh Arya, were also sanctioned with fines of INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever is lesser. Despite these penalties, Punjab Kings performed exceptionally well on the field, securing a five-wicket victory in a chase of 210 runs.
The visiting batters displayed great aggression, preventing the five-time champions from taking control of the game, even though the slow-over-rate decision affected their overall performance. However, Iyer will not face a match suspension if the Punjab Kings commit another over-rate breach in the remaining matches of the tournament.
This change in policy came into effect before the start of the 2025 season, as the BCCI revised the rules regarding penalties for slow-over-rate offences. The decision-makers removed the provision of a one-game ban for the skipper after three such violations in a season. Now, the focus is on fines and fielding restrictions during contests, which eliminates the risk of suspension.
The IPL now follows a Code of Conduct similar to the ICC’s approach. Any sanctions can result in demerit points being added to a player’s record. If a player accumulates too many demerit points, they may be suspended by the administrative body.
