Shreyas Iyer’s Historic Encounter: KKR vs PBKS in Australia

A Unique Matchup in the IPL

Leading a team against their former team is not an uncommon occurrence in the Indian Premier League. However, witnessing history from both sides is truly unique. Shreyas Iyer has been recognized as a capable captain, having led three different teams to the IPL final, a feat yet to be matched by anyone else. In addition, he has experienced the thrill of Punjab Kings defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in two different seasons, with Shreyas at the helm in consecutive years.

On April 5, Punjab Kings will face off against the home team, Kolkata Knight Riders, at the iconic Eden Gardens. The weather forecast predicts rain, with possible showers that could affect the match. Despite the heavy heat throughout the day, the outfield was covered in water patches after an afternoon downpour yesterday, which led to the cancellation of the practice session.

KKR’s Need for a Win

At this stage, KKR is in dire need of a win. They are among the teams that have yet to secure a point. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane will lead his Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer, who is now at the helm of the Punjab Kings. This matchup brings back memories of a batting explosion in 2024 and a remarkable bowling performance in 2025.

A Golden Year for Shreyas Iyer

Anyone who has visited the stadium would remember the crowd cheering for every boundary. 2024 was a golden year for Shreyas, as he led KKR to their first IPL trophy in 10 years before moving to Punjab. Eden Gardens, known for its fast outfield, helped the home team reach a massive total of 261 runs while losing only 6 wickets.

There are clear reasons why KKR fans miss Phil Salt. On that day, Salt scored 75 runs off 37 balls, hitting 6 boundaries and an equal number of sixes. Gautam Gambhir, the mentor, used Sunil Narine as an opener throughout the season, a strategy he also employed during his captaincy. Narine contributed 71 runs off 32 balls, hitting 9 fours and 4 sixes, with a strike rate of around 222.

Jonny Bairstow’s Show

Despite KKR’s confidence, Jonny Bairstow had other plans. The Sam Curran-led Punjab had a strong batting lineup, including the discovery of Shashank Singh. Punjab managed to chase the target within 19 overs. Prabhsimran Singh provided a good start for the visitors, scoring 54 runs off 20 balls. His partner, Bairstow, continued the onslaught. He hit 8 boundaries and 9 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 225, and remained not out at 108 runs from 48 balls. Shashank completed the chase with 68 runs off 28 balls, hitting 8 sixes and 2 boundaries. This remains the highest ever chase in the IPL.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Marco Jansen Save the Night

This time, the match is taking place in Mullanpur, with Shreyas Iyer leading the Punjab Kings. The bowlers made their mark. Punjab managed to score just 111 runs in 16 overs, with Prabhsimran adding a decent 30 runs and Priyansh Arya scoring 22. For KKR, Harshit Rana took 3 wickets for 25 runs, while Narine and Varun Chakravarthy each took two. Among the KKR bowlers, Varun was the only one who completed his quota of 4 overs.

The powerplay was handled effectively by Marco Jansen (3/17), while Arshdeep kept the runs in check. Glenn Maxwell supported Yizi in the middle, and Marcus Stoinis ended the final hope by dismissing Andre Russell. Interestingly, Shreyas became part of the IPL’s lowest total ever defended, but he was on the winning side.
