A Promising Future for Liverpool
Arne Slot, the Liverpool manager, has drawn comparisons between 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha and the legendary Mohamed Salah after a remarkable performance in a 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday. Ngumoha opened the scoring with a stunning goal, setting the stage for a dominant first-half display that ultimately led to three crucial Premier League points at Anfield.
This was Ngumoha’s first goal since a dramatic late winner against Newcastle in August and his first goal in front of a home crowd. His performance was so impressive that Slot highlighted his potential as both a long-term and near-future asset for the club.
A Growing Talent
Slot expressed confidence in Ngumoha’s development, stating, “He’s not only the long-term future but also the near future.” He noted that Ngumoha has been gradually increasing his playing time due to his growing strength and ability.
“He’s shown that it wasn’t only a nice trick but there was more and more end product to what he did, and more power, which is needed if you play against the best defenders in the world,” Slot added.
The manager emphasized that Ngumoha’s goal at Anfield was not surprising, given his special qualities. “He has such a special quality you don’t see very often in football anymore, dominating the one-v-one situations,” Slot said. “That’s what he did when he scored his goal, making the ball free by twisting and turning and then hitting it in like a Mo Salah finish.”

Pressure and Possibilities
Liverpool’s win provided some relief for Slot, who has faced growing pressure throughout an underwhelming season. The recent heavy losses to Manchester City and Paris St Germain intensified this pressure, but Ngumoha’s performance offered a glimmer of hope.
Slot now faces a critical decision regarding Ngumoha’s participation in Tuesday’s challenging Champions League match against PSG at Anfield. The Reds will look to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the return leg.
“I think he is ready. The question is can he do this two days later? Would he be able to play at that level? Yes,” Slot said. “It’s not like at the beginning of the season when he was a young player getting experience of the first team. Now he is someone I can pick for any game, so also Tuesday.”
However, Slot also mentioned that midfielder Curtis Jones is doubtful after sustaining a groin injury during the match against Fulham.

A Dominant First Half
Ngumoha’s 36th-minute strike was followed by Salah’s 256th goal for the club, four minutes later, rewarding Liverpool for their dominant first half. Despite Fulham’s efforts in the second half, they were unable to pull one back, leading to a tense finish.
Fulham manager Marco Silva acknowledged the impact of Liverpool’s early goals. “The game was decided in five minutes and our approach was not aggressive enough on and off the ball,” he said. “We gave Liverpool the chance to build up their attacks too easy. That was the reason why they had the chances and were in control of the game.”
Silva also noted that the second half saw improved performances from his team. “The second half was completely different. We created much more chances as well but we were not ruthless enough, as with a goal we can create a different scenario.”
