Liverpool’s Leadership Stands by Arne Slot
Liverpool’s leadership is showing unwavering support for Arne Slot as the club looks ahead to the next season, despite growing concerns over recent performances and results. According to internal sources, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and senior club figures are backing the Dutch coach and have no immediate plans to make a managerial change. The belief within the club is that Slot, in his first season following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, should be given time to develop his own style and approach.
This confidence comes despite a noticeable decline in form that has sparked questions about Liverpool’s future and their ability to compete at the highest level this season.
A Difficult Run Intensifies Scrutiny
Recent matches have only added to the pressure on Slot. Liverpool suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on April 4, followed by another disappointing performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. These results have raised concerns about the team’s direction and its capacity to perform consistently at the top level.
The loss to PSG was particularly concerning. According to reports, the French side dominated the game from the start, with Désiré Doué scoring early and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia adding a second goal after the break. Liverpool struggled to gain any control, failing to register a shot on target and experiencing limited possession. The numbers highlighted how comprehensively they were outplayed.
Tactical Decisions Come Under Fire
The performance led to sharp criticism from pundits, including former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. He questioned Slot’s tactical choices, particularly his use of a back five formation.
“The manager has tried something [a back five] but he’s got it massively wrong tactically in how he went about it,” Carragher said on CBS.
He pointed out that the team was more vulnerable with the back five than they would be with a back four because they played man-to-man across the pitch, forcing the three centre-backs to cover the full width of the field.
Carragher added that Virgil van Dijk would likely advise the coach to “never play that system ever again.”
Uncertainty Persists Despite Support
While public criticism has increased, uncertainty about Slot’s future remains. The Athletic reported that his position could be in jeopardy if Liverpool are eliminated from the Champions League. However, the current message from within the club is one of continuity rather than reaction.
The coming days may prove crucial—not just for Liverpool’s European aspirations, but for the broader narrative surrounding Slot’s first season in charge. The team returns to Premier League action against Fulham on April 11 before hosting PSG in the second leg of their quarter-final on April 14. This fixture could significantly influence the trajectory of their campaign.
