Socceroos Star Set for City Comeback

Mathew Leckie’s Potential Return to A-League Action

Mathew Leckie, a key figure for the Socceroos, might be set for his first A-League appearance since October. He has been included in Melbourne City’s extended squad for their upcoming match against Wellington Phoenix on Sunday. This development comes after a challenging season for the 35-year-old veteran, who has only managed three A-League appearances due to persistent hamstring and soft tissue issues. These injuries have necessitated hip surgery, which has kept him out of action for a significant period.

Initially not selected for this weekend’s game, Leckie impressed during training on Saturday, earning himself a place in City’s 20-man extended squad. His inclusion replaces attacker Ben Mazzeo, marking a potential return to the pitch for the experienced midfielder.

City coach Aurelio Vidmar expressed confidence in Leckie’s readiness, emphasizing that it ultimately depends on how Leckie feels about his physical condition. “He’s the only one who can feel how his body’s feeling,” Vidmar said. “He looks fine on the training track, but it’s got to be Mat himself who says ‘I’m ready to go.’”

Vidmar also highlighted that Leckie doesn’t require extensive training to maintain his fitness. “Generally, he’s one of those guys who doesn’t need a hell of a lot of training. He’s generally pretty fit anyway. Match rhythm is completely different, but he just always finds a way, finds an extra leg when he needs it, and that’s how he’s been for his entire career.”

Other Key Players Returning to the Squad

In addition to Leckie, several other players are set to make their return to the extended squad. The key trio of Patrick Beach, Ryan Teague, and Marcus Younis are all back in contention. Goalkeeper Beach has been sidelined due to a quad injury, while midfielder Teague has been dealing with a knee problem.

Marcus Younis, who has been a standout performer since joining the club on loan from Danish side Brondby in January, is available again after serving a one-game suspension. His suspension followed a red card in City’s 3-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Melbourne City’s Ambitions

Melbourne City is aiming for a third consecutive win in their upcoming match against Wellington Phoenix. Recent victories have propelled Vidmar’s team into the top six, and a win on Sunday would further solidify their position. However, a loss could see Wellington Phoenix, who have won three games in a row, move into sixth place at Melbourne City’s expense.

Wellington coach Chris Greenacre emphasized the importance of every game for his team. “Every game is a final for the Phoenix,” Greenacre said. “Hopefully we can get the result that the performance deserves more than anything.” He added that the players are delivering strong performances currently and that consistent effort is crucial. “We have to keep doing that. It won’t just happen. We have to really work hard at doing that, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
