Socceroos Snatch Late Victory Over Cameroon in FIFA Series Opener
A dramatic late strike from Jordan Bos has gifted the Socceroos a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Cameroon in their opening match of the FIFA Series at Accor Stadium on Friday night. The crucial goal arrived in the dying moments, breaking a stalemate that had persisted throughout a largely uneventful contest.
The decisive moment stemmed from a well-worked move, initiated by a pass from substitute Paul Okon-Engstler. The ball found its way to wing-back Bos, who seized the opportunity after a miscued interception attempt by Cameroon’s Samuel Kotto. Bos, demonstrating commendable composure, slotted the ball home to secure Australia’s first win in their last four outings, following successive defeats against the USA, Venezuela, and Colombia.

The victory was a testament to the Socceroos’ significantly improved second-half performance. The introduction of Nestory Irankunda and Awer Mabil immediately after the break injected a much-needed dynamism into Australia’s attack, which had struggled to find its rhythm in a subdued first half from both sides.
Missed Opportunities and VAR Drama
Despite the improved tempo, the Socceroos’ first genuine scoring chance didn’t materialise until the 71st minute. A penalty was awarded after Cameroon’s right-back, Oliver Kamdem, was adjudged to have fouled midfielder Aiden O’Neill. The decision, however, required intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The subsequent spot-kick, taken by substitute Ajdin Hrustic, was ultimately saved by the Cameroon goalkeeper, Devis Epassy, denying Australia a direct route to the lead.
Just five minutes later, the Socceroos had another opportunity to break the deadlock. However, replacement defender Cameron Burgess couldn’t direct his header on target. Soon after, Irankunda himself had a chance to score, but his shot was also parried away by the alert Epassy.
Bos Delivers the Late Heroics
It was in the final stages of the match that the Socceroos’ persistent pressure finally paid dividends. Jordan Bos, netting his third international goal, proved to be the match-winner, rewarding his team’s second-half dominance with a clinical finish.
Injury Concerns for Metcalfe
Amidst the jubilation of the win, a cloud of concern hangs over the Socceroos camp. Midfielder Connor Metcalfe was forced off the pitch in the second half with what appeared to be a knee injury, a worrying development ahead of their upcoming match against Curacao in Melbourne on Tuesday night.
New Faces on the International Stage
National coach Tony Popovic handed Socceroos debuts to two players for this fixture: striker Deni Juric and the promising 18-year-old central defender Lucas Herrington. Both players were included in the starting lineup.
Juric, who plays his club football in Poland, had previously been selected for Australia’s squad in November but was forced to withdraw due to injury. Herrington, a former player for A-League club Brisbane Roar, recently made the move to Major League Soccer outfit Colorado, where he has reportedly made a strong impression.
Speaking before the match, Popovic expressed his philosophy for the debutants: “They’ve been given an opportunity, and I haven’t said too much to them to be honest. I don’t want to put the pressure on them, let them enjoy it, let them relax (and) embrace the moment of representing your country. We want them to feel the confidence from the whole staff, and all the players, and just go out there and do their best.”
Unfortunately for Juric, his impact on a somewhat subdued first half was minimal, and he did not feature in the second period. In contrast, Herrington played the entire match and demonstrated a remarkable level of composure and assurance on the ball. His defensive contributions were solid, effectively nullifying Cameroon’s attacking threats and marking a memorable debut for the young defender.
