Late Bos Strike Secures Socceroos FIFA Series Victory Over Cameroon
Sydney, Australia – The Socceroos have broken their winless streak, clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cameroon in the FIFA Series at Accor Stadium on Friday night, thanks to a dramatic late goal from Jordan Bos. The crucial breakthrough came in the dying minutes, injecting much-needed excitement into a match that had previously lacked significant attacking flair.
The decisive moment arrived courtesy of a well-worked play initiated by substitute Paul Okon-Engstler. His pass found its way to wing-back Jordan Bos, who capitalised on a missed interception attempt by Cameroon’s Samuel Kotto. Bos demonstrated composure under pressure, slotting the ball home for his third international goal and securing Australia’s first win in four outings, following recent defeats to the USA, Venezuela, and Colombia.

The victory was a testament to the Socceroos’ improved second-half performance. After a somewhat lacklustre first 45 minutes from both sides, the introduction of Nestory Irankunda and Awer Mabil at the commencement of the second half injected a palpable sense of urgency and creativity into Australia’s attack. Their presence immediately livened up the Socceroos’ offensive efforts, creating opportunities that had been scarce in the opening period.
Despite the improved tempo, Australia’s first clear-cut chance didn’t materialise until the 71st minute. A penalty was awarded when Cameroon’s right-back, Oliver Kamdem, fouled Socceroos midfielder Aiden O’Neill. The decision was confirmed after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). However, the spot-kick proved to be a missed opportunity, with substitute Ajdin Hrustic’s attempt brilliantly saved by Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Devis Epassy.
Just five minutes later, the Socceroos had another opportunity to break the deadlock. Replacement Cameron Burgess met a cross with a header, but his effort sailed wide of the target. Youngster Irankunda then tested Epassy again with a shot, which the Cameroonian keeper parried away.
Ultimately, the Socceroos’ persistence and second-half dominance were rewarded. Bos’s late strike ensured that the team’s efforts did not go unrewarded, providing a significant morale boost ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
Injury Concerns and Debutant Insights
However, the victory was tinged with concern as midfielder Connor Metcalfe was forced off in the second half with what appeared to be a knee injury. This development will be closely monitored by the Socceroos’ coaching staff as they prepare for their next match against Curacao in Melbourne on Tuesday night.
National coach Tony Popovic handed out two coveted Socceroos debuts during the match. Striker Deni Juric and the promising 18-year-old central defender Lucas Herrington were both handed starting roles.
Juric, who plays his club football in Poland, had previously been included in the Socceroos’ squad for the November matches against Colombia and Venezuela but was unfortunately forced to withdraw due to an injury. Herrington, a recent acquisition for Major League Soccer outfit Colorado after a stint with A-League club Brisbane Roar, made an immediate impression with his assured performance.
Speaking before the match, Popovic expressed his desire for the debutants to embrace the occasion. “They’ve been given an opportunity, and I haven’t said too much to them to be honest,” Popovic told Network 10. “I don’t want to put the pressure on them, let them enjoy it, let them relax (and) embrace the moment of representing your country. We want them to feel the confidence from the whole staff, and all the players, and just go out there and do their best.”
Unfortunately for Juric, his debut match did not yield significant impact in a largely subdued first half, and he did not reappear after the interval. In contrast, Herrington played the entire match, showcasing a calm and assured presence on the ball. He demonstrated quality defending throughout, effectively nullifying Cameroon’s attacking threats and marking his debut with a memorable performance. His composure and defensive solidity suggest a bright future for the young defender in the green and gold.
