Sooner Softball Steals First SEC Series from Auburn

Sooners Stage Dramatic Comeback to Secure Series Victory Over Auburn

The Oklahoma Sooners softball team demonstrated their resilience and offensive power on Saturday, staging a remarkable comeback to defeat the Auburn Tigers 8-5 at Love’s Field in Norman. This crucial win not only secured the series for the Sooners but also marked a strong start to their Southeastern Conference (SEC) play.

Kasidi Pickering was a standout performer for the Sooners, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and driving in three runs. Her contributions were pivotal in Oklahoma’s rally from an early deficit. Abby Dayton, Kendall Wells, and Gabbie Garcia also added to the offensive effort, each recording two hits. This victory improved the Sooners’ record to an impressive 27-2 overall and 2-0 in SEC competition.

The Sooners’ ability to chip away at a significant early lead showcased their tenacity. In the series opener on Friday night, Oklahoma had already demonstrated their offensive prowess by run-ruling the Tigers 13-5 in six innings. Gabbie Garcia was instrumental in that game, hitting two home runs to lead the charge.

Game Recap: A Tense Battle from Start to Finish

The Saturday contest saw Auburn jump out to an early 2-1 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run homer from Alyssa Hastings. Oklahoma pitcher Miali Guachino, however, showed her mettle by striking out the next three batters. The Sooners quickly responded in the bottom of the first, manufacturing a run when Gabbie Garcia singled to right field, driving in a run with two outs.

Auburn continued to apply pressure, extending their lead in the second inning with another two-run homer, this time off the bat of Ma’Nia Womack. This brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Tigers.

The Sooners managed to get on the board again in the bottom of the third inning. Abby Dayton hit a double to right field, and Kasidi Pickering followed with a two-run blast to left field, narrowing the gap to 5-3. Kendall Wells also contributed a double in the inning but was left stranded at third.

Pitching Changes and Defensive Stand

Miali Guachino’s outing concluded after four innings, during which she surrendered five earned runs on four hits, striking out seven batters and walking two. The Sooners made a pitching change in the top of the fifth, bringing in freshman Allyssa Parker. Parker pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits but no runs, and striking out three without issuing a walk. Her performance was critical in shutting down the Auburn offense and providing an opportunity for the Sooners to mount their comeback.

A key defensive play occurred in the middle of the sixth inning when Sooner catcher Kendall Wells gunned down an Auburn runner attempting to steal second base. This negated a potential threat and maintained the tie score.

Sooner Offense Explodes in Late Innings

Oklahoma’s offense, which had been quiet for a few innings, came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 5-5, the Sooners batted around and scored three crucial runs to take their first lead of the game.

  • Kendall Wells drove in the go-ahead run with an infield fielder’s choice, scoring Abby Dayton, who had doubled to start the inning.
  • Gabbie Garcia followed with an RBI double to right field, bringing Kasidi Pickering home.
  • The Sooners extended their lead when Auburn pitcher Ella Harrison issued a bases-loaded walk to Ailana Agbayani, forcing in Garcia.

With an 8-5 lead heading into the seventh, Allyssa Parker closed out the game for the Sooners. After an infield single to begin the inning, Parker retired the next three batters consecutively to secure the victory and the series.
