NSW Waratahs Aim to Break Chiefs’ Curse in Super Rugby Pacific
The NSW Waratahs are riding high after a stunning victory over the ACT Brumbies, and now they’re set on making history by defeating the Chiefs for the first time since 2014. This win could be a game-changer for their Super Rugby Pacific title ambitions.
After ending an eight-match losing streak in Canberra, the Waratahs are determined to secure a win in Waikato. A victory here would not only mark their first win in the region since their championship-winning season but also boost their chances of climbing into the top-six finals.
Teddy Wilson, the new starting scrumhalf, acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains confident. He points to the team’s recent 30-28 win over the Brumbies and last year’s surprising victory over the then-ladder-leading Chiefs as key sources of motivation.
“Last time we played them, it was a big game. We were at Allianz and most people didn’t think we’d win – the boys turned up,” Wilson said after Friday’s captain’s run in Hamilton.
“There were areas that we exploited last time around, and we’ll definitely look to do the same tomorrow. We’ve identified where we can exploit them and have full belief in our game plan. We just need to go out there and execute it.”

Wilson emphasizes the importance of a strong start. A win against the Chiefs could see the Waratahs leapfrog them in the standings and return to the top-six finals race.
“If things go wrong or we lose momentum, we’ll go back to our process and game plan. We need to keep hammering down and doubling down on what we believe will work for us because if we do that, the momentum will swing in our favor.”
With coach Dan McKellar resting Jake Gordon and bringing the Wallabies star off the bench at FMG Waikato Stadium, Wilson is eager to make his mark in his first Super start of 2026.

“The coaches always give me confidence to play my game. If I see space, I’m able to take it,” said the free-running No.9.
“The way we’re playing this year, the Waratahs are looking to play off fast ball, and our ruck is really important. Generating quick ball is super important. Once we do that, opportunities around the ruck will arise, and that comes into my game. I need to spot those opportunities and take them when I can.”
Key Strategies for the Waratahs
- Fast Start: A strong opening is crucial for the Waratahs to gain early momentum.
- Game Plan Execution: The team must stay focused on their strategy, even if things go wrong.
- Ruck Play: Quick ball from the ruck is essential to create scoring opportunities.
- Exploiting Weaknesses: Identifying and targeting the Chiefs’ weaknesses will be a key factor in the match.
As the Waratahs prepare for the showdown, the entire team is buzzing with excitement. A win over the Chiefs would be a memorable moment for the players and fans alike. With the right mindset and execution, the Tahs have a real chance to turn their fortunes around and take a significant step towards the Super Rugby Pacific title.
